Miniature Tokyo: devlog archive

new and pretty ambitious project that ive started up recently. this post will sort of be like an archive so i can save progress as well as get some feedback while im at it

will get updated whenever i feel that enough progress has been made. honestly not sure how fast things will go since im juggling a lot right now. might have a friend or two to help, but i do have to teach them how to use studio

Wow! That’s a big project, but it looks fun! Good luck with the rest!

I’d already tried recreating cities, but I soon gave up. Could I ask what method you use to do it quite quickly?

start off with keeping a zoom level on google earth–i picked the very final 200m measure reference as my zoom level

from there i just started screenshotting and pasting images into photoshop. the photoshop canvas/file itself is like 20,000x20,000 pixels so i can just paste my screenshots which are like 1200x800 pixels whatever. from there i manually align and resize if needed

to pick an area, i zoom in to an area where there will be enough resolution to see small roads, but still keep as much area as possible. i box that in (you can see the red and yellow) and screenshot whatever is in the box then export it to roblox to use as the road references which you can see in my screenshots

buildings are completely eyeballed though. exporting building data would have been too tedious and satellite creates too much noise. i usually use road widths as building dimension references

OK, thanks so much!!! :+1: I’ll give this technique a go, and if I manage to build at least part of a city, I’ll show it to you.

progress is pretty steady and actually faster than i thought originally. hope to get this done by next week since there are a lot more small buildings here

That’s so cool – it’s a simple model, but it looks really lifelike all the same! Well done on your work @xaz_idyl !

estimates were pretty off for how long this section took. juggling a lot so this has been on and off, especially since this is just something i work on when im bored

depending on how fast results come in there may be only one more update until september since im gone for the rest of august but expect this to be continued
