Mo's Guide To Designing Clothing For Beginners! || Do's and Don'ts

Hello everyone!

Hi! I’m Mo and I’ve been designing for a few months now. I’ve decided to share some of my tips for designing and a few do’s and don’ts which could be useful to people who are just starting out.

TIP 1:

Useful Applications that I use to design (click on the arrow to view)

pixlr.com
medibang.com
Both of these applications are free!

TIP 2:

Remember to shade your clothing!

Shading can have a really good effect on your clothing, it can make them look realistic.
This is an example of how I shade my clothing.

  1. Make a few lines for shading on a new layer! Darker shades of the base colour give the best effect!

  1. Use gaussian blur.

Choose what amount of the blur looks the best on the clothing.

  2. Change the blend mode to overlay and reduce the opacity.

  3. Make a new layer and add traces of white for the highlights

  4. Add some amount of Blur.

  5. Reduce the Opacity

TIP 3:

What to Design?

Look for real-life clothing to recreate, there are tons of inspiration on pinterest.com
You can also get inspired from speed designs on youtube, but do not copy the entire outfit.

TIP 4:

How to grow your designing group!

Remember that patience is the key to success.
These are some tips which might help you to grow your group!

- Run advertisements

- Build a homestore
I’ve heard that people find it much more entertaining and convenient to shop at homestores rather than the store page.

- Have an appealing logo and group description
The first thing that people look for when joining the group is, the logo and the description.
I would suggest having a GFX logo and a description mentioning the group’s goals and all the ranks.

- Keep your group active
Host events and do the group shout everyday. This would give your members a reason to come back everyday to check on the group and would keep it active.

- Do not steal
Please do not steal or copy clothing from other designers as this would have a bad impression on the group. Designers spend a lot of time on their clothing and it simply isn’t good to steal.

- Do not advertise on other group walls
I’ve learnt this from my own experience, to never advertise on other’s group walls. It gets people annoyed and leaves a bad impression on your clothing group.

Thank you for reading this post and I hope this is helpful to all the designers who are starting out.
Good Luck!

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments and let me know whether I should add anything and whether this helped you!

This is very helpful but what is the difference between Pixlr X and Pixlr E? They look very similar.

Pixlr X has less tools, good for begineers and making quick edits. On the other hand, Pixlr E has more and advanced tools and has high flexibility to create a good edit.

Yeah, I’d recommend Pixlr E for designing.

Ok thank you for the help. :slightly_smiling_face:

Good job on the tutorial. You might edit and add Clothing to the title to specify what you are designing.

Thank you! I’ll edit the title.

No problem, Good luck on designing!
