Music can still be heard even when roblox volume is 0

Before I explain the issue, let me address some facts:

  1. I am not the developer of the game
  2. This issue appears to be related to reverb; however, since I was playing someone else’s game, I cannot confirm this.
  3. I was hearing a toned-down version of the audio, as if I were only hearing the reverb effect but not the music itself.

Note:

This appears to happen only sometimes and not other times. I am having trouble finding out the common factor between when the issue starts or determining when it is server-wide or client-based.

Reproduction Files:

I am not the owner of the game, so I cannot provide this information. However, you can recreate the actions by joining the game I linked, pressing K and selecting music from the menu. Now, when you turn your volume to 0, you will be able to hear that you can still hear the reverb.

Expected behavior

When I turn the volume to 0, all audio from Roblox should immediately cease.

Your video shows no sound playing when your volume is set to zero. What are you on about?

I have seen this a lot, it’s been a β€œquirk” of the Roblox engine for years now, I doubt they have much reason to fix it.

It also happens to me sometimes. I tought I was schizophrenic:skull:.

It seems like a way for developers with malicious purpose to bypass the Roblox audio settings. I think this should be of concern to their objectives toward player safety. If you want them to fix the issue, I’m sure you should agree with me.

Imagine small children who join Roblox, trusting them to provide a safe enviroment. Just to join a game that is playing inappropriate audio. And whats more? When the kids try to set their roblox volume to 0, they can still hear the audio! This is a big safety concern to not only children but average players alike!

Higher volume =/= less safety. People usually react to loud audio by either taking off their headphones and reaching for hardware/native volume controls, or simply leaving the game.

ps: Your use of ChatGPT is pitiful, and that's putting it lightly.

So what you’re saying is, I should just let my kid turn off the volume of a porn game instead of leaving it? Developers can’t bypass audio restrictions, audio isn’t even playing in your video.

Hey KrimsonWolf, the reason this happens is that SoundService’s AmbientReverb property gets sent a copy of every Sound in the DataModel in parallel to the main mix (whose volume is controlled by the menu volume slider) – so when you mute the main volume, the reverb still takes a moment to naturally decay. This should be possible to fix, we’ll look into it.

As far as I am aware, it shouldn’t be possible to hear audio continuously after muting the main volume – just the brief reverb decay-time – does that match your findings?

I am having the same problem. There is music playing and even when i turn the volume in windows sound mixer to 0 it still plays. I check the the whole game for Sound and AudioPlayer Instances and deleted everything and it was still playing. Other than rejoining the game nothing helps.

no: The reverse endlessly plays the original audio. This only happens sometimes though, and only in specific games such as the one I mentioned.

If you want another example of this issue occurring, I noticed this in Arsenal when I was playing through their experience for The Hunt.

It absolutely was not the reverb naturally decaying, it was as if a part of the track in a multi-track audio was stuck playing despite volume being set to 0.

Tbh I think Roblox needs to look into the volume setting.
It’s very insensitive for some reason.

Maybe I just have really sensitive ears but when I set the volume of a game down to 50% it still sounds like as if it’s playing at 90% volume.

I have to set a game’s volume to 20% to make it sound half as loud.

And you can still bypass it.
If you duplicate a sound 10 times and play all instances at the same time you can still go way beyond the volume setting.

I think Roblox just sort of scales volume down in a poor way and just doesn’t limit it so stacking sounds allows you to make audio VERY loud regardless of user settings.

I actually expected Roblox’s volume slider to work more like the volume slider on a computer or phone where the volume actually is limited and cannot exceed a certain decibels without raising it back up again.

Just thought I should reply to this post despite its age since I’ve also been experiencing this issue recently, specifically in the game Driving Empire. It does seem to have something to do with the reverb. I hear a very short sound every time a backfire or engine sound is created or looped. The sound can take anywhere from instantaneous to about a full second to stop completely. This is very bothersome and it made me think it was my new headphones at first. I also agree with what the OP said in the sense that it could be a security issue. Above all else, I believe β€œvolume off” should do exactly what it says since it could be intrusive to other activities players may be involved in at the time.
