My Very First GFX

Back about 3 months ago I created my first GFX, I did it as a proof of concept that my laptop could render well. I was looking through the forum and say everyone else showing their GFX, I am tempted to start making them again. Feedback is welcome but remember it was my first GFX.

(I am still not sure about the sand texture, everything you see was either made by me or is royalty free)

Um some things that will make it better

  • lighting is lil bad if you know what I mean that yellow light makes no sense and then the background lighting aka the sun’s strength is pretty low.
  • the pose is pretty weird they are sitting but their had movements show they’re marching or something.
  • and sure thing I don’t see any textures try PBR textures for now they will increase the quality by so much.
  • try adjusting the metallic and roughness properties they will level up the quality by so much.

I hope you understand that I am not wasting my time criticizing rather I’m trying to help.

This is nice for your first GFX!
There are some things I would suggest changing, but it’s otherwise great as a first GFX.

  • I suggest changing the lighting. The yellow light looks very out of place. If there were a visible light source (such as an overhead light or a lamp), it would have fit in more as there would have been a given light source and a reason for the light to be there. The light source from the sun seems to be coming in from behind the soldiers based on the shadow positioning outside, so unless a wall or something is blocking the light from being cast onto the subjects, there should be light there.
  • I suggest also working on the background a bit. Obviously, it was your first time, and you still have a lot more to learn, but one thing I suggest is trying to have the objects within the background match. For example, the tent’s top was given a realistic texture, while the trees look more cartoonish. The table and wood flooring have nice, realistic, wooden textures, while the banners have a cartoony, plastic texture. Sticking with one style, whether it be cartoony or realistic, or even in the middle, would help a lot. All elements present in the artwork would flow and blend nicely together.
  • I suggest working on posing a bit. The posing for the subject behind the table looks great. If you apply the same look or posing to the other subjects, it would look more natural. They look a bit bland and don’t have much movement or character to them. Posing really does give an image life and gives the subject(s) character, so improving on that would definitely help in the future.

For a first time GFX, I think it’s great. You could definitely open up commissions one day.
Keep up the good work! :+1:

It looks great for your first GFX but the lighting is green/yellow and looks out of place, maybe have the soldiers posing a bit more. Its good for your first one though!

Thanks so much, feedback is always welcome I will fire blender up in a minute.

How do I add bumps to the texture and also the sand pattern looks very odd what nodes should I use to remove the tiling?

It depends on what program you use. Currently I’m using Cinema 4D. I use Normal maps and Bump maps to create more texture.

I am in blender, but I am still very new.

I think it looks great for your first.
Maybe better lighting tho.

The ground texture is extremely noticeable of how repetitive it is, if you used the texture coordinate → mapping → image texture, then change the size a lot bigger.

And I don’t recall the 1st Marine Division in a snowy theatre.

Great start. Maybe add more color and less people. You can even try to add props to the gfx to make it better.

This is great for a first gfx! In the future, maybe add a light so it doesn’t look like the green light is coming from the air! Good job though!

If you like the green light, possibly make it night time and add fire flies!

For your first GFX, it looks amazing. My favorite part is probably that old radio, it looks so good. Anyway, when I first saw it I thought it was snowy, and then I realized it was a beach. To fix this, you should make the sand more yellow so that people know it is sand. You should also make the shrubbery in the background more green, as it looks kinda dead, The roof of the tent behind looks like it is covered in snow. Sorry if I wrote too much, but I hope this helps.

Haha its meant to be sand, its Pavuvu Island, when the 1stMD used it as a temporary base in 1944, the GFX is for a 1940s era group.
