After playing and analyzing a few stealth/mystery games, almost all of them include this feature where they automatically assign a random character to you. They “disguise” your avatar with different appearances and names, which makes me wonder, what’s the point?
I don’t think there would be a huge difference if everyone were to dress up as their normal avatars.
Is this suppose to make the game look more “serious”? Preventing players from wearing ridiculous outfits perhaps? If so, isn’t it throwing away the “Character Customization” aspect of the site? Is to make others not know which user is which? Its quite unnecessary since players will refer to the culprit by their names anyway, username or not, especially when their assigned names are visibly seen above them.
If anyone happens to know any explanations, feel free to leave them.
Well, one of the main reasons for disguising the outfit is so that other players won’t know which player is which. It’s really not that hard to tell, but it helps mitigate.
I’m pretty sure games like Murder Mystery disguise you so players (who already died) won’t tell other players via discord or such who is the culprit is.
Another reason is probably trolling. Breaking Point has a disguise function and I pretty much use it only when certain players have a grudge against me and only target me.
– edit-- and yes, if they have a custom character, they can sell items to customize in their game
As @cooldaniel234 said. It’s harder for people to call out the killer. You could say “It’s Ser4x!” if you’ve seen my avatar. But with a disguise, you would have to identify them “It’s blue shirt” when there could be two people with blue shirts. It does make the game more challenging and it’s harder for people to target you.
