Names in relation to Roblox's Terms of Service

To put it simply, would words like “Chastity” and “Lust” be something capable of taking down your game? BEFORE you reply, I hope you can read the rest of what I have to say.

In a few books I’ve read and series I’ve watched, there is this concept that I’ve always been drawn to, the Seven Deadly Sins (Not from the anime series) and also the Seven Heavenly Virtues, though not in the religious sense, more in that I just like the concept of having a being which isn’t human limited to a single trait (though that isn’t the case in the actual religious sense, I guess?) Due to being drawn towards this concept, I’d very much like to make something that, whilst not completely revolving around the concept, but includes a part of the concept with my own twist, however, as mentioned before, the sins include “Lust”, which can be assumed as as a person’s libido rather than in a romantic sense, and the virtues include “Chastity”, which can, once more, be taken into a different concept, rather than purity (of heart)

Virtue Latin Gloss Sin Latin
Chastity Castitas Purity, abstinence Lust Luxuria
Temperance Temperantia Humanity, equanimity Gluttony Gula
Charity Caritas Will, benevolence, generosity, sacrifice Greed Avaritia
Diligence Industria Persistence, effortfulness, ethics Sloth Acedia
Patience Patientia Forgiveness, mercy Wrath Ira
Kindness Humanitas Satisfaction, compassion Envy Invidia
Humility Humilitas Bravery, modesty, reverence Pride Superbia

In the case of the game, it would remain child-friendly with those things included, as I don’t plan on having my game taken down any time soon, so the words are more likely to be used in the sense of a person’s name (and “personality”, though they’re just constructs), rather than their (visible) “actions” - subtle hinting through dialogue may occur to entertain older players? That can always be exempted.

Of the above listed, would any, particularly “Lust” and “Chastity”, result in a game take down, seeing as, whilst it can be interpreted to have sexual meanings, it’s really just “Love” and “Pure (of heart)”, though I feel as if changing the names to that would be a bit detrimental to my desires and would make it seem a bit weird in comparison to the rest of the words.

If they were to cause a game take-down, would their Latin forms be more acceptable, as not as many children know Latin, which may cause less misunderstandings and what-not.

EDIT: The names would be used to describe, as aforementioned, both the names and “personality”, of NPCs.

I would say that a good rule of thumb is that if you’re ever questioning whether a feature you’re considering adding crosses the line for Terms of Service violations, it would be best to omit it to be safe.

I think the biggest issue with using the English nouns (Lust and Chastity) is interpretation. Regardless of portrayal or intent, interpretation is really all that matters from a legal standpoint. If you change the nouns to Latin, you’re just walking around the issue. I’d recommend finding a similar word with less negative or controversial connotations. An alternative option would be to use the word “purity” (as you mentioned in your list) as that abides by ToS and is a related word.

Hm, if that’s so then I may just go with the Latin form - if everything’s just up for interpretation, then what I desired it to be may not even have a chance to be brought up before the game would be taken down. I’ll see what other people’s replies are for now, though the Latin for the virtues aren’t exactly words that roll off the tongue.

@SolelySoul yet again beat me to a response.

I think that it would be in your best interest to not include chastity and lust due to, as aforementioned, the interpretation. While not expressly forbidden in the ROBLOX Community Rules, any “sexual content” is prohibited. [Section II, Rule 2]

  • Providing users’ personal information;
  • Harassment or bullying;
  • Using or encouraging the use of profanity (swearing);
  • Child endangerment;
  • Hate speech or actions;
  • Impersonation and defamation;
  • Threats and self-harm;
  • Looking for dates or dating partners;
  • Sexual content or overly violent content;
  • Dangerous, unethical and illegal activities; or
  • Content that implies or makes an avatar appear naked or in underwear/undergarments. This includes solid color avatars without clothing.

If I were to join your game and see an NPC resembling lust (in the sense that it is opposed to chastity), one of my first thoughts would be to take that to a sexual connotation (and I think that would be true of most people…lol).

You may be able to pull this off, but it might be after an EMail battle with ROBLOX moderators who banned your game. I would stay on the safe side and not include lust and chastity.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this and best of luck with the game!

Thanks!

I think I wasn’t overly clear with this, but the NPCs for these 7 (or 14, if I decide to include all of them), are meant to be sort of “figure-heads”, so they won’t have any “appearances”, due to the excuse of being in another part of the world, or overly busy - the concept is a multitude of other concepts from other genres, so really the NPCs are just there in name, hence the naming, and with certain rumours regarding personalities of them and those who would “serve” them - like big-shot serve (Trying not to be specific because I’ll probably go on a rant), so the most “sexual” of the content would probably be nothing physical and apparent on the screen, just words, and due to being subtle, they’d be designed so that even the older audiences wouldn’t notice it immediately unless they specifically looked for it, somewhat like inside jokes, and younger audiences would, mostly, only find them if they were doing some high-key analysis - which isn’t likely.

An example would be something like Lust being the name (not title, set in an Alternate Universe), and things like the majority of his servants being females, or being around females a lot, or a tendency to not fight females (stereotyping a lot there, they’re just examples, of course, but it gives an idea of whether that would be something able to be considered “sexual” or not)

So it seems that Latin names won’t go against the ToS? Guess that’ll be a last-resort technique.

Side-note: Rumours will come immediately after the namings in an explanation of the major “powers” towards the start - basically a world overview - leading to less possible misunderstandings, they’d also be phrased like “House Lust, House Gluttony”, as if medieval European, in a sense.

Lust is censored by the Roblox filter. You definitely can’t use lust as a name since it’s censored, but there are players with the name “chastity,” so it’s not censored. I’d use the Latin form for at least lust, if not all of them, since luxuria isn’t censored. “Luxuria” also doesn’t have the exact same English connotation; it isn’t so much “lust” as it is luxury or opulence.

ROBLOX mods are pretty good at figuring out nuances like an NPC named lust being around women a lot.

Lust will be censored, so the Latin name will likely be necessary. Using the Latin name will also make it harder for people to take it the wrong way.

In regards to both your post and @posatta, it seems that the Latin versions of the names would be necessary, however then, would the aforementioned “rumours” of “personalities” and “actions” (which can refer both to those regarding their name and things related to war, economy or other-world related actions) not also become something that isn’t allowed?

Also, the idea of them being around women a lot, would just be that they are mostly seen with a women in tow, not the fact that they’re always around women, it would also be mentioned that they aren’t all seen a lot, due to their statuses and responsibilities.

EDIT: Rumours aren’t necessary, they’re just something that I’d feel would enhance the lore more and make the player feel, somewhat, more involved, as they get a choice between which of the 7 (or 14) they get to choose.

I’ve got to go somewhere right now, I’ll get back to you in under an hour regarding that question :hidere:

I started this 30 minutes after I said that, then switched tabs and forgot for 8 hours lol.

I’m not going to give you a definite answer primarily because the ROBLOX ToU doesn’t give one. I think your current proposition might be okay as you aren’t obviously breaking or evading any rules. I would suggest you be extra careful in how you carry this out.

I still suggest removing lust and chastity, but as mentioned above, you might be okay. You can, at least, add them and if there’s a problem with moderation remove them.

You’d probably want to use the Latin forms. Without completely parroting what anyone else said, you’d better off not chancing moderation and use the Latin names instead. They sound cooler anyway. I’m not sure how important name schema is for your game, but it wouldn’t quite be worth the risk of the English names and their connotations. Even if it’s not something you do, players might abuse that fact. Your game can get taken down for things players do en masse, not only things that you do.

One thing to keep in mind is whether or not players can actually use these names in chat. For example, if they wanted to discuss ‘Lust’ with another player, they may have a hard time doing so as it’s most probably filtered. ‘Luxuria’ is definitely the safer option.

Alright, I’ll go with the Latin forms of each of them, thanks everyone for replying!

I’d like to give the solution to more than one person, though that’s not really a feature, so I’ll go for the one with the most information in relation the ROBLOX’s Rules.
