Hello everyone, first time doing this kind of post lol.
I’ve been working on a new speedometer for my racing game since i believe the old one i had was too outdated and also didn’t really look great (at least, that’s what i think).
I’m trying to go for a minimalistic look for my speedometer, but I’m not exactly sure if what I’m doing is correct.
I’m not really going for something that’s perfect, just something that looks nice, simple and is also readable.
The speedometer itself is somewhat simple, it doesn’t contain any RPM indicator or anything of that matter. Just the speed of the car and some categories to make the experience better (The chassis itself is simple, so I don’t need any of that information).
Here’s how it looks right now:
I wouldn’t really want the speedometer to look huge, since I want it to somewhat fit within the screen and look great with the rest of the GUI elements. But if it’s needed for a better look then I’m willing to go for it.
For anyone that needs it, here’s how it would look with the rest of the GUIs:
It looks more like a menu rather than a speedometer. Personally I prefer seeing as much of the visual aspects of games I’m playing than be forced to see a menu that I’d only set up one time.
Maybe have a speedometer GUI, with a button for Settings which would open up another GUI to show the player the other setup options.
Anyways after staring at the GUI for some time I’d say you are right, I had the idea of doing buttons for the settings but I wanted the GUI to be somewhat straightforward (I am not even sure if the way I did it was straightforward but in my mind I believed so).
I also had the not very impressive idea of looking through the internet for references, since after all I’m not really an expert in this field.
Hiya!
I’m just used to games that have a small separate settings button to do all the hidden items.
Although if a player might be switching the camera view often while racing that might be better with UserInputs rather than trying to find the button on the screen.
After some work I came up with this, the setup and cameras tab are put into separate frames since people don’t use them that much. While the ones that are used the most are put in the main frame.
The bars are just throttle and brake indicators, just as a little detail to use some of the empty space on the sides lol.
Honestly I like to see less menus during a game so I can get immersed in the actual gameplay.
I’d even take the 3 top spawn menus and put them in another drop down menu on the RH side.
Then add a bit of colour to each side menu so it’s easy to detect from the list.
Its a great start to see something like this, but I feel there is tooo much text: therefore, I would recommend using icons to represent functions. These are the icons I use, they would look a lot

I am currently working on a Ui base plugin, to clean Ui’s into a certain theme. But I haven’t finished it yet. So for now I would recommend you to add UiCorners, so its less square.
If you remake this on https://www.figma.com/ (figma), I would be more than happy to edit and fix it for free.
Heres, some Ui, I have made if your looking for inspo:
