Need help with map design

The red container with satellite is the outpost, the shed is the blacksmith, and the little grey house is shop, i wanted to redo the blacksmith and shop buildings, because it looks weird in my opinion, but i got this idea:

Instead of having multiple houses i would make one big house where all the npcs would be.

Im not a good builder at all so i need opinions from better ones.

  • Multiple houses
  • Single big house

I think you should do multiple houses in almost a town format. Add some random little village looking houses and then make your shops and stuff near them. Depending on your style you can design this little town like area however you want, but i think keeping them seperated yet compressed into a main area is the best way for you and your players.

Keep me posted on what u end up doing

I think the weirdness is because none of the structures feel connected in any way. Try adding a large road of some kind (can literally just be compressed snow or gravel, not a proper road) with the structures surrounding it, with smaller paths if you want some buildings further away. Also, the random lights are a little strange. You may want to remove them or just have large lights coming from the structures.

Hi, this reminded me of an old map I made.

It was an artic SCP outpost. Geez that was years ago.

A singular building in multiple parts is easier to work with.

You can clump it all together, put a concrete base, and a fence around it as well.

I will think about it, since theres more npcs coming along the gameplay like in terraria, i will try adding more houses and try to keep the style consistent, thanks for replying, when im sort of done with it i will post results.

the lights are like this because its very dark in night, i will try to organize them a bit better, adding paths sounds good, there unfinished one buried under the snow so i might continue that one.

In that case you have a few options for lighting:

  • Increasing ambient light
  • Giving flashlights to players
  • Giving lamps to players that passively light up the area around them (basically making players produce light)
  • Adding massive lights to structures pointed out at the snow to light up the areas near the structures

Anyway, it’s all up to you of course. I would just recommend not having a bunch of victorian-style lamp-posts around the map and far from structures. It is both unrealistic and strange to look at. That being said, if you end up making a road you can use lamps of some kind to light up the road, just not snowy areas further from structures.
