Need some help on growing my community

I have a community on Roblox where I script games and people play them: like a development group.

I would like some tips and advice to grow my community as I’m new and would like to start a community. I’m the only active developer on said group as of right now.

I would like to try Ads - but considering how unreliable it is (and the fact that it’s very expensive) makes it very hard for me to grow my small community.

My current roadmap is advertising on social media, but I would like to gather your ideas and tips.

One thing that I like to do to find small developers on YouTube is to search “roblox devlog” or something and then I change the filter to “most recent.” You could use this method and then reach out in their comment sections or roblox groups and ask if they’d like to join your community! I’ve noticed that people with small audiences are more likely to interact with people and their viewers are usually interested in connecting with roblox devs as well.

If that doesn’t work, you could try joining the game Developer Donations (it’s like pls donate) and just start talking to people.

I hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi there.

For expansion, I’d recommend a YouTube series (like the above comment)

Or, if you’d like more direct interaction - I would suggest creating a small Discord server (Or Guilded server if you want to stick with Roblox)

While you can’t put the invite links in your game, you can still use them on the game’s page, which will surely attract some people.

Some clarification:
While you can’t directly put invite links in your game, you can direct users towards the link on the game page by saying “Join our communications for more information.”

Hope this helps!

That’s a great idea, thanks!
As of right now: I’m mainly just creating shorts on social media (of course like a series) and then if one series does really well, I keep making these. I probably have to mention in the shorts to make people join.

I’m still pondering on what kind of series is best to create:

  • Devlog series as you mention
  • Short games made for shorts (idea taken from below mentioned channel)
  • Scripting Comments
  • Making a game based off friend suggestions

(New Ideas)

  • Showcasing a game where the user has to do something to gain a reward
  • Showcasing a system that does something if a condition is met
  • Adding weird features to something

I have taken some examples from another developer channel (@kokopbel) however I still would like to create my own series instead of copying off someone else.

If you need any information or sources such as channel link and group link, let me know

I’m not really towards direct interaction, although I am considering if I should also target that. It’s mainly to advertise the community so that people see the games and try playing it.

I think any of your ideas would work for a series and I think there would also be some dev channels out that would be willing to collaborate with you!

Posting your channel and group link here is definitely a good idea because people who see this might want to join! I’ll join!

Thanks! I’ll edit the main post to include the links

I should also try collaboration. I’ve noticed how games like Doors, and much others often have collaborations they made either before or after the game was well known, so I should adopt those.

(please don’t mind the shenanigans on the group, i’ll definetly have to remove those before starting a community)

lolol no worries i personally like game groups that are active and friendly so i’m sure there will be other new people that agree

I don’t have too much knowledge about development communities but this seems interesting so I’ll join! If you need any help let me know, I have own my own clothing group and might be able to help if you need something

I tried that, but only found channels that only create development content sometimes (basically their channel is not mainly about development)

I’m still lost on what I should go with to grow my community without having many setbacks

Did you change the search filter to sort by upload date? All of the results I get are people who only create development content and I’ve joined a couple of discord servers over the past few months when I see someone that’s cool.

Another idea I just had would be to put an ad in the talent hub. I think people might gravitate toward your community because there are no deadlines and stuff and it’s just a cool place for people to meet. I’d definitely recommend building your discord server first tho. I used the community settings on mine and it was really easy for me to make rules, roles, and channels that way

Honestly, I think the best way to grow your community is to post videos on social media. I’ve gained 80k subs, 31k group members, and 1k members in my discord server (though it’s pretty dead since I haven’t been active in a while). I’ve gained all of these from YT Shorts and TikTok. No money spent at all.

I mainly learned by paying attention to how other big channels made their videos (pacing, hook, etc). My best advice right now is to just upload something and pay attention to the statistics. Just keep going from there, eventually you’ll find out what series to start and whatnot.

I wish you good luck!!

NO WAY ITS THE GUY HIMSELF
Thanks for sharing your opinion dude

I think the tiktok algorithim isn’t on my side since I get more views on youtube than on tiktok

By the way, could you share some ideas or suggestions for some hooks or series?
I don’t know how you do it man :sob:

I don’t have any extra ideas right now, sorry :frowning_with_open_mouth:

but I’ll say i came up with my current series by just trying to focus on what might make a really interesting video. I tried to come up with something shocking. that’s how I came up with “pay to lose” , “be afk to win”, etc.

also for hooks, just try to quickly say what the video is about. for example, i’ve done “this game is pay to lose”, “in this game, you have to be afk to win”, etc. I can’t recall the exact stats right now, but I think both vids had around 85%-90% view rates.

if you wanna improve something, find a channel which averages millions of views (roblox related or not), sort their shorts by most popular, then just pay attention to all the little things. write down all the hooks (or whatever you’re trying to improve) then at the end, you should have a good base which you can take inspiration from.

right now i recommend just trying to upload anything interesting. you’ll figure all of these out along the way from your statistics

edit: sorry for the whole essay :skull: but yeah

it’s ok the essay helped me more haha
thanks for the suggestions

Hey, I know ads can be really tricky sometimes. However if you understand how the algorithm and analytics work it’ll become so much easier to get your game growing in just a week or two.

Algorithm:

The algorithm is based on analytics, if your games stats are great the algorithm will pick you up and show your game to others, the algorithm isnt just a cheat code though. Your game would still have to continue performing well off the algorithm.

When the algorithm picks your game up, you will be put on Home Recommendation. Think about what games show up for you, and the games you would play. Look at how they represent themselves, the game name, description, thumbnails and icon.

These are all super important when it comes to Ads and Home Recommendation as the represent your game, im the first 10 seconds of seeing it the player would have already decided if they want to play or not.

Analytics:

Analytics show alot of things about your game and can be confusing to look at a first glance, i’ll do my best to break it down for you so its more understandable.

Session Time:

This is how long on average a session is running for before it ends, the analytics will provide targets for you to reach. Yellow will be around 6.5 and above minutes and green will be around 12.5 minutes and above. Your goal is to have the Session Time in the orange or green. You can make playtime better by changing how your game works, you can take inspiration from current games where they use playtime rewards or find your own new way to keep players interested and playing.

Retention:

Retention is how many days players return to your experience after their first visit. You will see 2 boxes, day 1, and day 7 retention. Day 1 displays how many players on average return after day one, day 7 displays how many people are still returning after 7 days. This is really important for your game to hold an active playerbase. Again just like the Session Time you have to find ways to boost this, other games have used Daily Rewards to boost this or chests you claim each day. You can try new ways that work for you.

Monetization:

While this isnt as important for algorithm to pick you up, its important to ensure your experience is earning robux back from what you have spent. You can earn more robux by adding more passes/products and ensuring you are advertising them properly ingame.

Conclusion:

If you nail all of these, and of course have a game in which players enjoy, the community playerbase should start to grow with it. I know Ads can be tricky but with the simple steps I explained above you should start to notice a huge difference. Also you don’t need to make these changes just for Ads, they will boost your analytics either way.
