New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

Well, I think that all of them are actually pretty decent. I only think that the sand and grass need a bit of tweeking. Besides that, I personally really like the new textures.

So you are saying you like plastic? bc thats what each texture looks like.

The issue is in regard to what people go for in reference to texture. If he wants to make a build where the inside of a facility is a little rugged with concrete, then he should be able to do that with the old concrete. There aren’t too many issues outside quality dissonance in the new materials, but to say that we should have only the new materials and not just more added to what we currently have is absurd.

People inherently like options, people like to personalize, and people like variation. If a builder says they aren’t happy with the new materials because it makes something of theirs look different than what they intended, then by default I am not going to like the modified version with the forced material changes so much because that is not what was intended by the builder in any way. Because the original intent was with the materials provided, I am able to like that piece of work more because I know that is what they were going for the whole time.

In my honesty opinion, the original photo by @ChallengeDev looks better. If the goal by Roblox is to improve things, they can go right ahead. Unfortunately, just as there are plenty of ways to do things right, they are infinitely more ways of doing it wrong. The fact that we are getting new materials is great! Here’s the thing though, and you should probably think this for yourself:

Do I want a material, or a set of materials, I am familiar with that I’ve had experience working with for a good deal of time in relation to modeling and building forcibly replaced with materials that, although made with good intention and substantiate some level of decent quality, don’t exactly provide the same set of applicable uses in comparison to the ones I’ve used before?

Okay, so still support compatibility lighting, R6 avatars, use of the Mouse object, and a number of other features, but forcibly replace the currently existing materials? Why wouldn’t implementing a legacy part materials setting for a game be viable? I mean, what do I know, but you’ve allowed players to continue using compatibility lighting and the Mouse object, so why not these materials?

This is unnacceptable. As much as i like the new textures, I’d rather keep the old ones. ROBLOX has had 6 MONTHS to listen to our criticism and provide us with an ability to at least keep the old textures in our games if we’d like, but NOPE, not today. Instead of making it optional it’s FORCED onto us with no alternative. Don’t even try to use custom textures, because nooo, we don’t have support for reliable custom textures. We have to individually texture each side of each part, and on objects like cylinders it hardly works. You almost ALWAYS need to use roblox textures or a texture kit. I am 100% against this update regardless of the textures. I would much rather have “longer” loading times (the loading times aren’t long to begin with-) than have to swap every individual texture i have placed. But that’s Roblox. “Powering Imagination.”

Some builds will look completely different and probably won’t carry the same visual effect that they did when they were first created when these new materials are forcibly implemented. While I agree that these new materials aren’t all that bad, changing the texture of the parts is akin to changing their color.

i will pay for someone to release a texture pack on the toolbox with old materials

But it’s an update… when the Roblox client is updated, you don’t really have an option to go back. In my mind, this is the same thing. The new replaces the old.

Well, what would happen if the same thing would have happened before this was even announced? Either custom textures or making due with what we are given. Roblox has already informed us that they have several other textures in the works, so I see no reason to worry.

Given the circumstances, the new materials. They are a huge improvement and make games look 10x better! Not all change is bad. Change can be difficult to get used to, like this will be, but the benefits outweigh the negatives.

It’s actually quite funny. They provide the means for personalization and customization to a substantial degree, yet, for some reason, this can’t be done for any reason in relation to actual building and processes relating to development?

I feel like in some way, Roblox actually wants to do this in order to weed out a lower quality grade of developers and force developers to work on some kind of higher standard.

Then change them? I don’t see the big issue here with updating a game.

Last thing: It’s going to be virtually impossible to readjust our old builds. We no longer have the older materials which we were so used to, which wrapped perfectly around cylinders, spheres, wedges, meshes and parts. Even if we make them custom textures, roblox has no support for accurately working out custom textures. The main reason I’m upset is that roblox expects us to just deal with such a sudden change. Many of us have months and even years’ worth of experience with the old textures, and for many, it will be nearly impossible to adjust. Even disregarding the fact that we have to change our old builds, our new builds will be extremely difficult to create.

Okay then! You spend over an hour going through every part and adding textures to each side? tell me how big of an issue it is after that! Plus, Fun fact! Textures will not work like roblox studio textures on meshes!

To you, and maybe 5% of the other people in the thread.

Everyone,

Thank you for the tremendous amount of feedback and interest in this topic. Looking through the feedback (and I mean looking through every piece of feedback) the team and I understand the need to keep your choices alive while we explore how to provide better materials and update Roblox look & feel for the future.

As such I am announcing that the plan of proceeding to force update the materials is on hold in favor of trying to figure out a way to give you the optionality to receive the new materials. Exact details on how we will make this possible is to be decided, but I will reach out to you directly when we are ready to share.

Please continue to provide feedback here and give us examples to improve the new material look & feel while we figure out the release plan.

Textures still look really good. Things like Wood and Wooden Planks were aced. Compared to the old textures, it’s very easy to make a showcase now…

In principle, it is still the same. New materials replace the old. Unfortunately, you’ve failed to grapple with the fact that you don’t need to fix what isn’t broken, ESPECIALLY in reference to what people want to convey and how they want to present it.

Here’s a visual example:

This is a build I work on from time to time. The whole premise is to convey a sense of high detail and some degree of architectural system that reveals itself to be intricate to some capacity. One of the ways I do this is by using a suitable, rugged material to provide some nuance of additional intricacy and “detail” when none actually exist.
Here is what the new update does:

Now, all of a sudden, despite the additional “clarity” that comes from the new slate material, a certain nuance of intricacy and detail no longer exists to the capacity once there! Now you may ask yourself, “Why don’t you just switch it? It’s easy, should be no problem!” To that, I say it actually is! You’re right! Let’s switch it over to a material that substitutes this intended nuance I had once set for this particular design of mine.
Here is the change made with the new materials:

Uh oh! That’s a little too rugged for me! With the use of materials, I have made the visual clarity of some particular details and lines somewhat more difficult to see. It certainly isn’t blinding, but it isn’t eye candy either. What I have now from this apparent issue of options in reference to materials are two things, really:

  • A: Deal with it.
    or
  • B: Deal with it, but give some “feedback”

Wait a minute, I thought I had two options, these two are basically the same! Unfortunately, with the general idea that these don’t really need any criticism beyond “feedback” and the potential for “more additional materials! ©”, there really is no room for anything else! For someone, like me, who likes to create certain builds and models for artistic, decorative, and architectural purposes, this doesn’t work so well for me!

As a result, what I am left with is the convenience of having both old materials and new materials being completely absent beyond updated replacements and “don’t worry bro more is coming but they’ll probably be the same in terms of quality lol.

Thank you so much. I didn’t mean to come off as harsh; I just found it frustrating that it seemed like we didn’t have much of an influence at all on this decision.

LET’S GOOOOO

Thank you SO much for listening to us. I will remember this decision for the rest of the time I am on this platform.

Okay. So maybe they take our feedback into consideration. I’m happy.
