If your argument is that the materials only look good when you have Future lighting enabled and higher graphics quality settings, then you aren’t thinking straight. Enabling Future lighting in your game is a major performance penalty for all but the lowest graphics settings. It is simply not viable to work with for many games where performance across many platforms and hardware specifications is top priority. For many developers, ensuring that the core elements of their game aesthetic is preserved from the highest to the lowest graphics settings is paramount.
With that said, these new materials are clearly problematic on low graphics quality, and brushing it off as “oh, you’re not properly experiencing the materials” is short-sighted.
I was using an old build in my post above, but my statement still stands,
While this texture is better than the old build, it still looks strange as someone who is used to the old wood texture. I can see how these textures could be used in some cases, but being someone who uses the Sand material for things like speaker grille cloths, and things like concrete and pebble for tolex casings on synthesizers and amps, I don’t like how the new textures limit you to the one thing they are set for.
Detailed, concise, and no difference in color scheming.
Got to hand it to Roblox though, they made the new materials mostly consistent through different graphic scales. Only problem is that there is a huge quality difference between the materials themselves.
How do you manage to make the new materials fine on every graphics level but make the new materials themselves difficult to mesh and combine with each other?
Credit to @ROBLOXStudioB145 for the sets. Keep the old materials with the new materials, PLEASE.
Don’t know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but most of the new materials don’t wrap around cylinders. Overall, the sheer amount of issues with scaling, tiling, and compression quality is insane.
For the sake of not flooding this post, I’ll just list the rest:
Asphalt (Very subtle)
Brick (Wraps properly but has some sort of two-tone thing going on)
CorrodedMetal
CrackedLava
DiamondPlate
Foil
Glacier
Granite
Grass
Ground
Ice
LeafyGrass (Very subtle)
Limestone
Marble (Very subtle)
Mud
Pavement
Pebble
Rock
Salt
Sand
Sandstone
Slate
Snow
Notice that this list comprises of every single material that received drastic PBR updates asides from Wood and WoodPlanks.
Wood and WoodPlanks are arguably perfect in every regard. They seem to be the only updated materials that have actually had a lot of time and effort spent on perfecting them. They wrap perfectly around cylinder parts. No tiling issues except for when they’re under shadows (All of the new materials have extremely noticeable tiling under shadows). Lastly, the biggest thing for me is the fact that their compression quality is perfect. Out of all the new materials, these are the only two that retain their quality when your camera is at a reasonable distance.
Why can’t all of the materials have the same amount of effort put into them as Wood and WoodPlanks? I was so excited for this update but the inconsistencies are disappointing.
With new materials coming to Roblox Studio, we never know what possibilities we could do with them!
I have a question though.
Will you keep the old materials?
I’m concerned, since most games use old material to make their parts look aesthetic and realistic. If this is a forced update, it will ruin everything!
I’ve thinking the idea of keeping them, but also still adding the new ones, so there will be more combinations of materials in decoration! At least rename the old ones to Legacy, so we would not confuse them with the new ones!
Overall, a very extensive update to Roblox Studio!
Our game is really detailed and has a TON of parts, re-texturing just what we have right now is going to take a long time, not to mention I tried every single texture, and every single one looked bad for the reactor core, which is literally the main part of our game that’s supposed to look the best, not like some cheap knock off from the dollar tree.
The new materials are good for the most part, though where Roblox failed and always fails is their execution. Their execution of this update was AWFUL like depressingly AWFUL. Like don’t force push new materials on us and completely lie to us when you put out the survey just for responses to be ignored. At this point, it seems like Roblox doesn’t care about the community and only cares about profit (like all companies), stockholders (stonks), and more stonks. This update is like saying “Oh! Thank you for your feedback on our survey! We aren’t gonna listen to the feedback and only listen to our investors! Thanks for your not needed words! -Signed, the Uncaring Roblox Team.” (not saying everyone at Roblox is uncaring but with how they took feedback from the survey, it seems like they are.)
Sometimes, it is about making updates for the sake of improving things, not just because there are issues as a result of current things. In this case, the new textures are pretty awsome and look 100 times better than the old textures. An update didn’t need to happen, but if Roblox wants to improve, updates need to be made.
Nope! The new textures look phenominal and I really love the direction Roblox has decided to go with them! It makes me even more excited for custom PBR mataerials!
