New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

And that’s why they are doing an open beta. I am very glad that they do betas like this so they can get our advice as a community on how to improve the whole thing and make it ready for a full release.

Was realllllly looking forward to this :frowning: I hope there isn’t a huge change. Although, the new sand looks weird in my opinion.

New sand looks like it has veins.

Yeah I agree. Some of the materials do look a little bit wacky at the moment, but I am sure they will be improved sometime in the near future.

No. The only one I had problems with were sand. I liked all the other new ones.

Something you missed is that it only happens on terrain. And not just that it happens in current roblox and not due to the new materials. I really hope this gets turned down to 3 like it is on parts since PBR is not that demanding.

the roughness values are not unrealistic, though.

After reading everything on here, and looking at all the screenshots, examples, and opinions, I’m definitely on the fence about this. On one hand, I do like how some of the textures look, and I’m not opposed to change. On the other, some of them look a little too clean and cartoony for the material used.

I am glad that it being forced on us is being put on hold for now.

Some people have been saying that, but unfortunately it’s down to what the developers of the game would like and what they are going for. As I said before, it’s too smooth now than what we intended.

Edit: Didn’t see the solution post before posting. Glad to see our feedback listened to.

I’m sorry but forcing these new materials is the worst idea. We should be able to keep the old materials. Just look at this:

Current materials:

New materials:

As you can see, there is blatant tiling with the new materials and the whole map now looks not good at all. They are objectively worse than the current materials. The only good new materials I find are the two wood ones. The rest are either too waxy or too contrast-y than they should be. There are already plenty of posts showing this so I’ll leave it there.

Very disappointed with this update. Please listen to the community feedback.

As I said in my earlier clarification, my objection was to comparisons of old materials on high settings with new materials on low/default settings. The issue is that people are downloading the experimental build, leaving default render and lighting settings, and then trying to do apples-to-apples comparisons with the production copy of Studio where they’ve manually increased their quality settings.

If you want to do “old vs new” screenshots, first take the time to set both copies of Studio to identical render and lighting settings, which includes the Edit Quality Level if you’re taking screenshots in edit mode. This way, it’s a fair comparison of only the materials under the exact same conditions.

Just because something is called “sand” doesn’t mean you can’t use it for a wall if it could pass for it. If we actually used everything the way it was meant to be there would be a lack of human touch in builds, when every concrete wall looks absolutely the same in every game.

I’ve gotta vent something but I’ll support whatever Roblox is going for.

Pausing these materials indefinitely is not fun. :frowning: Jailbreak just moved over to Future lighting and we were so looking forward to using them there. I was also really looking forward to using them in my two dozen games dating back as far as 2012.

I see people complain about Slate but I don’t think they’re trying anything. If you switch your Slate to “Basalt” which is a new thing they’re offering, it looks BETTER than old slate AND lights react to it beautifully even on shadowmap.

Wood got more detail, a lot more, vs old wood. Grass got a speck more cartoony but still looks good and honestly BETTER when decoration is on vs the old grass.

We all ran through this 7+ years ago when materials changed. I spent a lot of time updating my materials and trying new ones but I’m glad I did. It made my games look nicer back then and it made all games look so much better moving forward. I feel most complaints here are unwarranted. These complaints existed back then as well but the only thing that’s changed is there’s more people around than there were back when materials changed the first time.
