Anybody remember when Roblox:

Removed outlines with very little warning? Before eventually adding an option.

Removed the first generation of materials. When Wood went from cartoon to realistic plywood? And no replacement?

Removed Bevels from bricks with little to no warning…

…and your only option was to use a ton of cylinders and spheres to recreate the style??

Well…

We were never given real options during these instances and they came suddenly.

This time around, Roblox fielded a TON of feedback over many months in another thread, while also warning us of the change months ahead. It’s been fantastic. I have never seen Roblox so involved with feedback.

“But my style” was the same complaint back then and I was part of those complaints many years ago. But Roblox moved forward and pushed the changes anyway. I remember being upset at the time but I’m glad it happened. The whole platform moved forward. I adjusted my styles on old projects and began new ones. I then completely forgot these changes happened. I guess I’m confused on why this time has to be different. Why not just push these new materials anyway. It’s super nice of Roblox to listen to those of you upset and halt the update. I just worry how much of a delay this is going to end up being.

Sorry for the “back in my day” old man rant  I know I won’t see eye to eye with some of you. No need to respond honestly. Just gotta put this out there.

Yeah, I get your point, But I find it positive that roblox is finally listening to the community! If roblox never listened to the community of developers, it would be worse then at least doing it once, right? Anyways, I gotta sleep, so I may not see replies until early in the morning (pst)

Fair enough.

I just hope you’re alright with being patient, since the change is going to benefit just about all developers at the end of the day.

This is fair, I have actually seen alot for good with most of the new materials. The only ones I can’t stand is grass and slate lol

The mortar, for some reason, becomes hilariously dark on lighter colours.

Whilst I think the old materials should be retained, I don’t think using Crossroads is a very valid argument - it is made of wholly Plastic and SurfaceTypes, the appearance of which is virtually unchanged.

I think i will be never a fan of the new “Grass”, worst of all is even that pine trees looking from far away like rock textures on it…

Yeah I don’t like the new grass at all

ya and this here also too btw

There is a difference between materials that look like they were made by a kid in paint, and the default slate material which was already PBR and looked just fine. The issue here isn’t just “it’s the future”, but rather how a lot of materials that worked just fine were abruptly replaced with no viable alternatives. With properties such as outlines I agree, it would also destroy a style, but a whole material is much more visible across a map than a 0.01 stud outline.

you need to darken the color of it.

I’d be all in favour of just giving us “LegacySand”,“LegacyGrass” etc, and then just hide it behind a toggle if Roblox -REALLY- wants to move towards a ‘new look’. Allow people that want legacy to get legacy, without overcrowding the materials section. “Show Legacy Materials” as a studio toggle that adds/removes them from the visible material selection UI would be intuitive, and it’d encourage new devs to use Roblox’s newer textures while still allowing us to use both.

I have seen that many people are unhappy with the current part textures being replaced, I personally am as well however as this quote from the main post would suggest we will hopefully soon be able to import custom textures that don’t need the use of library images/decals being a child of every part they want a texture on…

So, I would think that dedicated developers who really want the old look and feel of their creations to stay as they are, should be able to restore them after some time. Similar to the way those Roblox 2008 or Old Roblox experience games work but, again with fewer decals or textures inside of parts.

P.S. I’m unsure if Roblox would appreciate this or even allow it, though I’m sure the mods would just deny any uploaded textures that arent allowed.

P.S.S. I’m sorry if anyone has brought this up before me, I haven’t seen it posted and I don’t have the time to read all of the current 1,239 other posts.

Even the old diamond plate isn’t good.

I think this texture is best if it can be replicated in Photoshop or something. Not only would it have very good backwards compatibility, but also achieve realism at the same time: Aluminium Chequer Plate - Order Online - Chequer Plate Direct

This is what it looks like:

Real life application:

Honestly, this should be added back. Blender has this functionality, and adding it back could really help make CSG good again.

Well they’re gone now. They were deprecated in 2017 iirc, option added, but that option disappeared in May 2019.

This is also replicable by adding a black part ~0.005 studs larger than the original one.

A few personal examples of rebuilding outlines to increase detail:

The best option is to provide us both textures. Don’t be shy, give us a test build with both texture sets and we’ll see if any performance issues occur.

Rock still doesn’t look nearly as good as the current slate does and I really don’t want to convert everything that is slate into the new rock material…

This is a horrendous idea at best. Each texture instance has approximately the same performance impact as a part, so applying 6 textures per part means you get 14.2857% performance from before. Disgusting idea at best. I’m sure SurfaceAppearance is better though.
