Here’s the issue. It wouldn’t be a few weeks in that case and there’s every chance that they’d just give up. How much of a drain would that be? It’s needless and it’s not like they can just “oh ill change that material to that and all is good”.
Every part would have to be fine tuned. I use metal to darken textures and so I’d need to manually shift each part’s color to bring it back to what it was. With no custom colors in the color wheel, and no custom textures, that would take much longer than a few weeks. I’d rather be updating the game, not fixing it when it could’ve been fine as it was!
I think it was justified. An update that, as I explained above, could change their game so much that they’d need to redesign the map isn’t a welcome idea for most people.
Anyway, I’m not here to argue. Opinions are well… opinions and obviously not everyone will see eye to eye.
Personally, this is a step in the right direction. Its a way to improve every games look without developer intervention.
In terms of the new materials, theyr purely stunning.
I cant wait for the update to ship.
In regard to people complaining sbout their games being “completely ruined”, in all honesty, theyr all overreacting. 100% of the builds look equal, or better imho.
However, to those who argue, their lets say, cheese, which used a PEBBLE material, no longer looks like “cheese” and now looks like pebbles, and that this ruins their game, i am sorry but please dont blame YOUR incorrect use of materials on roblox. It takes 1 minute to download a material texture, and apply it to your model, at that point your being purely lazy, and instead of typing your harsh non constructive post, you could have fixed your cheese.
its also very, very very disappointing to see people treating staff members with disrespect, grow up.
I do not fully understand your english but this is what I get from your reply. I do infact build, I do create maps, and it is not impossible to select a few parts and go into the properties tab, darken all parts at the same time and choose a texture that may fit better.
As any company grows they will inevitably change. Roblox is no different, however there is maps that are definitely way to intricate for that approach. It is clear roblox is trying to improve as a platform, put simply a lot of people will just have to deal with it. I’m not denying the fact that there would have been 100 other better ways to implement new textures but beggars can’t be choosers.
The new materials look great and I am excited to use them, I also wouldn’t mind being able to mix old+new texures together for some areas out of curiosity.
Really liking the direction wood has taken. Planks match with the the wood much better than previously, and I really love how the the added depth gives it a really visceral- gritty sort of look when lit at an angle.
If you do end up coming out with this update I have some concerns raised.
For mobile Roblox wouldn’t the file size increase and maybe not work on some older models.
The colours are more saturated/less depending on the colour, how would you fix this?
The slate material looks as if it’s a plastic bag rolled up and stepped on which you then straightened out (No hate lol)
[EDIT] How would the graphics settings work? Would toggling the level change anything to cause it to look even lower quality?
These concerns might need to be addressed sooner or later.
Oh wow! Well, I didn’t know that, but yes, we would need to change properties for the SurfaceAppearance instance to do something.
Also, I’m sure you’ve been asked these two questions before, but, could you please add a SurfaceAppearance.Color property (just like Texture.Color or Decal.Color), and also tileable SurfaceAppearance for how many studs (just like a Texture instance). This would not only solve the backlash from this update, but it would really start to make Roblox attractive for developers used to Unity or UE4, maybe even AAA game developers!
One thing I have been really wanting is the ability to change the terrains material textures to whatever the developer chooses, will this feature come?
It actually depends. In some cases, such as my Central Market showcase, the new concrete is less noisy, so it brings it closer to real life. However, in a lot of contexts, I do agree the old concrete is better, even including some of my other builds.
By the way @Sorcus, I think it would be a good idea to remove this section from the original post, even though there is the solution at the end, some may not be able to get to reading it before hastily replying.
It’s a shame this update was halted, the materials looked amazing and offered a lot more customisation to games, the main argument I have seen throughout this post is people not willing to let go of the past (which is what Roblox players are known to do when there’s a sudden change).
I have been using the new materials on a few test builds and I am surprised so many people dislike them because they look great! Especially when you see some of the creations people are making with them… Hopefully this update comes soon and isn’t severely altered because people can’t put sand on their bed covers anymore.
I agree, because I find them good as well. However, I’m also aware that such drastic changes do violate backwards compatibility, such as slate having gone from a multipurpose rough rock material to just a useless feature. This is why people dislike it.
Asimo3089 has posted about the same PoV as yours in this topic, giving detailed past examples such as part outlines, bevels etc.
It’s a wish, but it won’t happen yet.
Tileable SurfaceAppearance textures have been asked for numerous times, but it is not likely to happen yet, despite it being an easy fix to everything here.
Have new materials added, but under different names (Ex: new grass being added as “SmoothGrass”)
Redo some of the textures so they can be “grainy” as they were originally to preserve their original looks. (Minecraft did a good job at this)
Make the colors less dark. One thing I’ve noticed is the colors are “offsetted” to be darker, this prevents us from using materials for “sci-fi” or “non-realistic” purposes. (like neon green rocks)
My takeaway
I believe this is a good update if done correctly, I’m glad terrain materials are getting attention, and I can definitely see how you could upset a lot of the community from something that seems to be minor.
