New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

Because of the way Roblox works, if you’re thinking of a toggle, at that point you should just have both simultaneously coexisting.

I only like the wood piece. I think everything else is not good.

No, a texture will, but be aware of performance issues.

Yes I agree, new materials shouldn’t replace the old, they should add on to it. Something like calling them version 2 of the material could work, and adding them to the list with that name.

SurfaceAppearance instances don’t work on Parts or Unions though, only MeshParts with good (non-degenerate) UV mapping. Even if you use a MeshPart with no MeshId as a brick, the SurfaceAppearance won’t tile, it will stretch because each face of the part is mapped to the UV unit square.

Honestly mildly annoyed that the wood texture no longer randomizes itself. It results in things like this. I believe this also affects brick.

Also, those textures have missing blue channels on the normal maps, which therefore makes them completely unusable.

I think the assumption was that you’d re-encode these textures as PNG and upload them, not use them directly from the content folder. Even then, you wouldn’t be able to create the original look because a number of Roblox’s current materials are not just ordinary seamless textures, they use Wang tiling to blend them seamlessly while still allowing for random variation.

That said, I would like to see SurfaceAppearance get extended to work on regular Parts, and for it to gain the OffsetStuds and StudsPerTile properties of the Texture instance. If you could just tile your own PBR brick or cobblestone (or whatever) onto any part, this whole update drama could just go away.

And that’s what made Roblox listen. They were about to disregard the feedback they got on the last topic, but luckily everyone spoke out against it and convinced them to alter course.

I think what most of us are angry about is the fact that ROBLOX doesn’t care a crap about what the community thinks

I think its more of a thing where, because roblox is “forcing” the update, people feel out of control leading them to create biased conclusions in attempt to re-establish their sense of control. Its rly immature and irritating.

Also watch your words.

Dude, if roblox released GOOD textures (which they shouldn’t in the first place, current “old” textures are fine) then it would be different

Lets say roblox releases an update that makes the discover page more organized and neat, and forever replaces the old design. people wouldn’t overreact because its a good update, even if it was forced. People are mad at this update because it is un-needed, and terrible.

Current old texures are far from fine, theyr horrible and embarrasing to keep.

The new textures are, from my view, and personal oppinion, AMAZING, and far far far from bad.

Its also very rude to call anyones work bad just because you dislike it, for whatsoever reason.

Also? wheres your constructive feedback, no one can help you out if you dont provide any constructive feedback.

I’m sayin that your point is wrong. that isn’t feedback, its telling you why the community is mad because you can not seem to figure out that yourself.

Also wdym? I didn’t call anyone’s work “bad”?

why are longer loading times such a big issue if it means literally saving developers tons of time and effort to keep the art style they envisioned and that suits their game best?
i love lots of these new materials and their style, but i don’t want them to completely replace the old ones. there’s good reason to use both.
PLEASE don’t force these new materials to override the old ones. longer waiting times, even for people with toaster computers like my own, are not that big of an issue if it means a better experience in the game.

After a considerable amount of time, I realized that I never gave any proper criticism to the developers. So, I intend to provide some right now. I also want to apologize if I seemed a little rude before, there was a lot that changed with the materials, especially concrete.
This is entirely my own opinion, I’m sure people will disagree and agree with me for certain parts. And yes, I am aware that they’re looking into keeping the old ones. Hope this helps clear up what I think.

Anyways, I will be splitting this into two sections, Material, then Terrain. Terrain is considerably shorter.

Materials

Overall, there are a lot of amazing features for this update. However, there are some things that should be spoken about. Some sections will be criticism, some will be praise.

Wood

NEW WOOD:

OLD WOOD:
image

The new wood texture is definitely an improvement, it is a good replacement for old wood.

Slate

NEW SLATE:
image

OLD SLATE:
image

The new slate on its own would be an amazing material to use, but the old slate had so many advantages during its time. The old slate texture had so much use (dirt, rock, etc.) and is a hard one to really replace. Another material similar to old slate alongside the new one would be cool.

Concrete

NEW CONCRETE:

OLD CONCRETE:
image

Honestly, the new concrete is way too smooth for me to actually use in many of my current projects which use concrete. A lot of the darker and more defined features are gone, giving it the waxed-out feel I see. Just like slate, maybe two different versions of this material would work, such as a smoother and a rougher version. It would be really disappointing to see concrete reduced to this more metallic looking material.

Corroded Metal

NEW CORRODED METAL:
image

OLD CORRODED METAL:
image

I have to admit, the new corroded metal material looks good. It looks a little closer to guts than anything, but I can see the rust on it. The old rust was a little more orange and spread around the area than the old one, but I think the new one also looks good. Maybe taking after the old one and adding those orange streaks around the area would help the texture out. Otherwise, looking good.

Diamond Plate

NEW DIAMOND PLATE (ENV → NO ENV):
image
image

OLD DIAMOND PLATE (ENV → NO ENV):
image
image

While the new diamond plate is definitely shinier, I don’t like it. The old diamond plate was way more detailed than the current one and had a dirtier look to it. It looks more realistic than the new version, which looks rather cartoonish. To me, it literally just looks like a bunch of ovals that were copied and pasted. This is definitely a downgrade.

Foil

NEW FOIL (ENV → NO ENV):
image
image

OLD FOIL (ENV → NO ENV):
image
image

The new foil looks more like clothing wrinkles when the environmental lighting settings are turned off. At the same time, the old foil did seem a bit over-crinkled. Overall, a mix between the two could work. The new foil just seems so… bland.

Ice

NEW ICE:
image

OLD ICE:
image

The new ice material is an ENORMOUS improvement from the old one. The old ice texture was barely noticeable in certain conditions and almost felt like plastic. The new one does look a little too dirty, but that may just be me. Pretty good texture.

Marble

NEW MARBLE:
image

OLD MARBLE:
image

The new marble material looks WAY too similar to the old granite material. It doesn’t feel like marble at all, in fact, I would see the new slate more suited for new marble. Yeah, old marble had its flaws, but it was really easy to use for many different situations. Now, the new marble seems more of a floor or counter-top rather than anything else. I don’t like this.

Granite

NEW GRANITE:
image

OLD GRANITE:
image

Realistically, I do believe the new granite fits so much better than the old granite. The only problem with this change (should legacy materials not be included), is that the old granite had so much versatility alongside it. Both versions could be a good idea, maybe even a modified old granite. It just feels like too big of a switch to be good.

Bricks

NEW BRICKS:
image

OLD BRICKS:
image

No variety! At all?! The brick texture for the old material was indeed low quality, but the indents on the new one are WAAAAAY too visible and there is barely any color variety between the bricks unlike the old version. I think the shadow and how wide the gap between bricks are the problem.

Pebbles

NEW PEBBLES:
image

OLD PEBBLES:
image

The new pebble texture is a HUGE improvement for sure. Props to whoever designed this one. There are a few problems that come with switching though, since the old pebble texture had versatility. Many people utilized the old pebble texture as a multi-purpose material and made some cool designs. Some people ended up using it as the top of stores or gas stations. Unfortunately, the new texture will defeat this. I think the new texture is fine as is, but maybe a rubbery texture similar to the old pebbles could be a good replacement.

Sand

NEW SAND:

OLD SAND:
image

Another highly versatile material. The old sand was commonly used in certain builds to get away with certain things. I can say that I’ve done the same. Anyways, the new sand looks amazing and could be a game-changer for terrain. However, it is a little easy to notice the repeats. I’d say find a way to keep both, as it could be hard for people to find a suitable replacement for old sand.

Fabric

NEW FABRIC:
image

OLD FABRIC:
image

People have said this before, I’ll say it again. The new fabric looks like yarn. I can see how it may be used, but there’s barely any variety in the colors to really work as a good carpet. The old material had darker spots for sure (though, it wasn’t a perfect carpet), which is why I use it, since it does give off a fabric feel.

Metal

NEW METAL (ENV not included.):
image

OLD METAL (ENV not included.):
image

Both textures look nearly identical to me and I don’t really have an opinion on it. The new one is definitely more reflective, which I imagine would be useful for certain situations. The old one had more scratches, but to be honest they’re barely noticeable unless you look really close.

Wood Planks

NEW WOOD PLANKS:
image

OLD WOOD PLANKS:
image

Holy smokes, this new texture is an insane upgrade! It looks way better now and it really does give me a wood feel. For some of my projects, I had to insert my own wooden plank textures because of its ugliness, but the new ones are definitely better than my alternative. Great work!

Cobblestone

NEW COBBLESTONE:
image

OLD COBBLESTONE:
image

The new texture is better than the old one. I’m worried for people who used the old cobblestone, as there is some versatility, but it shouldn’t be a drastic change. However, just like the sand material, it is too easy to see the repeating spots (specifically the gray holes).

Grass

NEW GRASS:
image

OLD GRASS:
image

The old grass was versatile, but it definitely never came across as realistic. It could have improvements. The new texture looks a little more cartoonish, especially with different colors. The grass also appears a little too flattened out.

–Materials with no old counterpart. (Literally most of it just me complimenting it, but there is a few problems)

ROCK

image

This texture has a lot of potential, but it feels way too low quality when you’re closer to it. Otherwise, it’s fantastic.

GLACIER

image

ALSO an amazing texture. It’s less visible but you can notice where there are repeats in the material. I really like the new glacier texture.

SANDSTONE

image

Great texture, a bit low quality. I can see this material used in many of my projects.

MUD

image

Amazing texture! This legitimately looks like mud, I will make sure to make a slipping mechanic for my games.

BASALT

image

This texture really caught my eye. It will likely be really useful for certain areas in many showcases. It’s a good addition.

GROUND

image

Looks really similar to mud, but it looks great. It seems like a lot of the added part textures are great.

CRACKED LAVA

image

I’m sorry, but I will personally never use this. It looks way too low quality than the rest of the textures, and I almost feel as if I can count the individual pixels. It has great potential, but it gives off a low-quality look.

ASPHALT

image

The new asphalt is really good, and is a suitable replacement for a lot of road textures (I commonly used slate or concrete). Nice.

LEAFY GRASS

image

Unlike its cousin, grass, it looks less cartoonish. I like the texture.

SALT

image

I can almost taste the salt. It’s very well made and it looks like it can have so many different purposes.

LIMESTONE

image

This looks great, I can see myself using it for something like the geysers down at yellowstone. Definitely an upgrade.

PAVEMENT

image

Love it, it’s rough, it gives off the right feeling, exactly what you would want from a material. I already have some ideas of what I could probably do with this.

Overall, the materials need work, but a lot of the originally terrain based materials are amazing and I would love to use them. One thing I want to note, though, is that the new materials are much harder to blend with other parts. With old materials, you may have been able to get a good combination. Now, it’s less likely. I’ll list the ones I notice here:
Basalt, Cobblestone, (maybe corroded metal), Cracked Lava, Fabric, Glacier, (somewhat ground and pavement), Limestone, Mud, Pebble, Rock, Salt, and SAND.

Terrain

Because of how short this section is, I will not divide it into the sections I did for materials.

image
Asphalt looks a little low in quality when looking at the terrain counterpart.

The brick terrain looks better in my opinion than the part version.

image
Grass as terrain is even more cartoonish than the material, surprisingly.

image
The terrain for pavement caught my eye because of the variance in colors. Maybe this could work better as parts too?

image
WHY IS IT PURPLE

image
The top of sandstone looks awfully smooth. It seems like erosion got the best of it, but I enjoyed the roughness of the old sandstone.

image
While the new texture itself is great for slate, I really don’t like the forced darkness for this. The original one to me always deserved to be a gray color and I usually used it as walls for caves in a mountainous area, since the general rocky terrain got boring. It was better as a slush. A little disappointing.

The terrain textures aren’t bad overall, great work.

Edit: It has recently come to my attention that the new concrete is not good with blending.

It was implied.

This implies that the new materials were never good to begin with.

Also, I think you’re saying this because of Herd Mentality, and not understanding the actual reason why everyone’s upset.

These new materials are awesome, but almost everyone doesn’t like this update because what it will do to their games. The art style of nearly, if not every game will be broken because people used the default textures in unique and creatives ways that the textures were never meant for; an example being using Grass as tree leaves.

Roblox wants to replace the default textures in a forced update making it impossible to revert to the Legacy Materials. This will make developers have to go back and manually change each part to a different texture if it doesn’t meet their standards. This will hurt old games and games that are no longer being updated because it will ruin the nostalgic art style, and games that are no longer being updated will look off and stay that way because the developer is unable to make changes to the game.

Wow. After 6 months, there’s still tiling problems with the Terrain Pavement.

Yeah, Kinda what I was trying to say, but I could’ve thought it out better :frowning: sorry!

transparency functions in the diffuse/color map of a SurfaceAppearance, so you don’t actually need to upload separate textures for separate colors. your point still stands on the part size & lack of tiling scalable SurfaceAppearance though.
