Going back to the legacy textures (Confirmed a feature hopefully) I have a suggestion for a feature that could go along with legacy textures (or custom textures) would be a “Texture pack” or “Texture Mixer”, Users can upload custom packs for their terrain/parts.
to me the old brick is better, I use it for roof shingles, the new ones will totally change that, its unfortunate
Go to studio’s recourse files, find the textures, and just copy those.
Maybe instead of removing or replacing materials, maybe just add the new materials as, well, new SEPRATE materials. I’d love to use the current slate and the new slate in the same build.
this is similar to what I’ve said a few times, Have like a folder system or something, have old and the new ones named different from old and in their own folder. I’m sure it could be done, but some people i talked to on discord about it said its because of file size, it would take longer to load for some people… however it would seem like pretty much everyone wants the old in some way, myself included.
seriously what happened to the grass lmao it honestly just looks so bad (the update is nice) but the grass is just a downgrade
They aren’t fully removing surfaces, they’re sticking around as decoration + removing them would kill the art style of a bunch of games, especially classic / non-updated games.
I hope that the custom material system in the OP can be used to preserve surfaces if they ever decide to get rid of them as a standalone property.
I am in strong favor of this. It would be especially good for lower end computers, which makes up a majority of Roblox players.
I wouldn’t mind having the option to use the old materials, for both parts and terrain, and I’m guessing many people are in favor of this also.
Amazing! I’ll update my game right away!
I love it, But as I am posting the announcement is posted that it’s on hold, So thank you for listening to everyone.
I have some feedback on the new grass and leafy grass textures.
The grass texture looks to repetitive, to the point where I could see grid lines.
And the leafy grass looks too different than the grass texture. For me, it seems like the grass texture just doesn’t merge well with the leafy grass.
Edit[1] Oh also one more thing, many people use leafy grass to have some spots to not have grass decoration, which looks very different than the grass texture. It gives the ground too many colors. When will the ability to paint on grass decoration be a thing.
Edit[2] After messing around a bit, I have to say that I would love to have more color control on the materials with terrains. Weirdly, I can control the color more on part materials than terrains.
I like the update, I don’t like how its being pushed. The hold is probably a good idea but I think a lot of people aren’t even trying to make the new update work? Like they’re just opening studio with the new update and seeing the new materials and judging right there. While I do think there are some problems; there seems to be a quality inconsistency with some materials, I really do think some of these are downgrades(Diamond Plate specifically), there are tiling problems. It’s not all bad.

I think this actually is an improvement. It looked awful initially but switch a few materials around and it shows promise.

New:
Overall I like the idea but it’s for sure too soon to switch. There’s a lot of seemingly minor things that need work still. These added up though turn into a lot of inconsistencies and bigger problems. Here are a few things I think should happen, my opinion of course:
-
Grass needs more work. It’s a bit flat. Also this new grass does not serve as a good replacement for the old one in terms of trees. As of right now grass is the only material option for doing leaves on trees.
-
Leafy Grass seems to be a way lower quality than Grass? These should be able to blend almost seamlessly in terms of quality but this is not the case and the leaves sharp low res look is a little jarring.
-
Diamond plate feels like a downgrade. Seems almost too simple, cartoon like? It’s not as bad as some of the other materials for sure but it’s worth noting.
-
Basically every material seems to be on it’s own level of quality? In terms of detail so if I put salt as the ground for example, I cant mix almost any material around it as they will look way different in terms of quality. Or maybe it’s just how they are but its very obvious.
-
Sand is a bit too harsh. I like how it tries to show depth but because there isn’t actually any there, it looks very weird.
-
Both Slate and Concrete are too flat in my opinion. Very hard to see most detail on them at basically any distance. Like 40 studs out you lose all detail in those materials.
-
EDITED THIS IN: Metal is absolutely too polished. I actually think we need another metal option or two. Polished has its place but not as a replacement. Pic for reference the lighting is untouched:

New:
That’s all I can think of for now after a quick look at things. I’m sure everyone else has pointed out more this was just my two cents. I would recommend to anyone who just instantly said it’s a bad update to actually try and adapt their game to the new materials before just throwing out the idea.
I still don’t know why this is the direction we are heading though if the plan is to allow for custom materials later? All the time put into these could have been put into that which I think everyone can agree is just the way better option. I don’t know though that’s just me.
hm, that could work?
not sure how that would work with non-updated games though and if roblox will do some weird stuff to get the custom material surfaces into those games or just leave non-updated games to lose their surfaces totally + it might break a few scripts in games which use surfaces in their scripting
Having to add textures to every single part in my game just because roblox wants to force an update that PROVEDLY ruins our builds is just mean and unconsiderate from you @Stickpuppet
I absolutely agree that most people here aren’t even doing that much in reference to these new materials and making legit use of them. I love your example showing how nice basalt is, though it’d be great if they increased the range of tiling for basalt.
This is really good news, and personally I’m quite happy with some of the new materials (mainly both woods).
A few materials I think that can be improved on are Granite, Slate, and Ice. I’ll list the reasons with images below.
First of all, Granite. Here’s a before and after.
Before the new Granite -
Lovely, dark, creepy looking Granite. It was perfect for making evil dimensions, creepy rooms, and just lots of horror potential.
After the new Granite -
Granite looks like the old concrete texture, it’s lost all of it’s creepy texturing, and it’s not as dark anymore. Would it be possible to keep the old Granite, or even just do a 2021 remake of the older one, like an updated version?
Next up, Slate.
Before the new Slate -
It has a nice, rough kind of texturing that I loved for making lakes, rock piles, mountains and many more.
After the new Slate -
This slate seemes to have lost that loved rough texturing, and now it looks like the old cobblestone, it’s just not as rough as it used to be. Same with the granite, could we get an updated version on it, instead of a completely different version please?
Finally, Ice -
Before the new Ice -
It’s nice, smooth, a couple scratches on it but that looks good. Not too much to say about this one. It’s nice!
After the new Ice -
I don’t have too many problems with this one, but it looks like crumpled paper, and that makes it hard to see out of. Could we get the new one, just without all the crumples in it?
I hope you guys see this one, and I hope you can improve on the new materials. Just to clarify, I do like most of them, but some of the old one’s just need to be brought back with an updated version
I hope my criticism will be well received, goodbye!
PS: The glass texture is completely broken!
This is what us Devforum people call “tileable SurfaceAppearance” or “tileable PBR”. There’s other people who also want it everywhere around you.
Exactly. This was suggested about 5 times in the first 800 replies.
Wrong. You are actually using ice with the glass. I remember exactly what both textures looked like; I myself have a fountain that used ice for water.
This is why everyone hates the new slate, it went from multipurpose rough material to useless junk.
You’re right. I personally have had multiple comissions since March 2021 that used the new woodplanks. Old woodplanks is trash compared to the new.
Future lighting is very laggy. You found out about that a few days after adding it. Roblox did a terrible job at optimizing it to say at the least.
It depends on context. FracturedOreo has Greek Temples that he can’t seem to work out, but Snow could be good for bathroom tiles (increased shine) and Rock is a valid replacement. If Roblox did have to force this on us, they could swap all Slate to Rock/Basalt etc.
