New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

Since people are posting pictures of their work on the old materials then the new ones. How about I do it too.

So here is a very wip showcase I am working on. First lets look at the old materials.
RobloxScreenShot20210605_013124965
The color choice and materials look natural. Look at the tunnel being rough concrete. The road looks amazing and rough. The terrain perfectly fits within the environment. Definitely something I can work with.

New materials:
RobloxScreenShot20210605_013327909

Concrete looks way to smooth. Maybe add a roughness meter (please)
The metal on the stop sign became more reflective (The pole) perhaps mind making it affected by reflectness values (Reflects environments, or only make it more specular or not)

The terrain is absolutely ruined. The grass looks more cartoony for a showcase (please add different grass types or variants so this can look good in many many different styles)
The dirt part of the terrain literally looks flat. Needs to be more rough.

The road part is completely flat (I know this is how it looks irl, but needs different variants for a new road and an old road)

Also I’m not sure if anyone else posted this but I’m gonna compare all the materials (including terrain and medium stone grey as the default color to check color baked, also on lowest and highest, also doing it with the new baseplate and default settings (Specular and diffuse values on lighting)

Old Materials (Max Graphics):
RobloxScreenShot20210605_014920751

Everything doesn’t seem too odd here so far. I don’t see a point of wood being a material for terrain.

Old Materials (Lowest Graphics):

RobloxScreenShot20210605_015526783

Materials such as Foil and Corroded Metal completely lose their pbr behavior on low graphics. Doesn’t seem to be a big issue. Also please make terrain materials have normals in graphics 3 (the level where parts have normals) You don’t have to in-case its an issue

Ok so first off. Lets talk about the materials for parts.
Bricks look too basic. Please add more variation to it. (different color brick pieces like the old one work really well)
Concrete needs to be more rough like the old one
Cobblestone is ok. More types of it and tiling sizes. Also follows a specific pattern
Rusted metal looks fine. Needs a slider for how much rust
DiamondPlate is good. But something isnt right. I like the old one better (looks too cartoony?)
Fabric needs more types (not just one)
Foil is… something
Glass is fine. Almost nothing changed.
Granite is different. The forced dark color is gone.
Grass like I said before looks cartoony
Ice looks rough.
Marble. Nothing to say about it. I perfer the old one by alot.
Metal looks far too intense on pbr. Add a slider about its intensity on specular like I said above
Pebble… yeah I need more types of it.
Plastic looks the same. Until you look at it upclose. Nothing changed.
Sand, Sand, Sand. Looks rougher than before. I’d still keep it though
Slate, Slate, Slate. The iconic material used for stone in many many builds. Yeah looks good but looks too smooth.
SmoothPlastic I believe has no texture. So uhh yeah nothing
Wood and WoodPlanks are good. They’re perfect.

Also don’t ask me why I didn’t review Neon or Forcefield. They’re special materials. They don’t have a texture like the other ones.

Second, The terrain materials (I changed no color at all on them and left it as the default colors)
Aspalt like I said before. Flat. More types please. (im not asking a change on it because thats how it should look like in real life, right?)
Basalt is pretty good. The new stone material I guess for parts
Brick. Same as the part material
CobbleStone, same thing
Concrete, same thing
Cracked Lava, good.
Glacier, good
Grass, like I said before. Cartoony (add different types too)
Ground, good
Ice, good
Leafy Grass, something’s unusual.
Limestone, good
Mud, good
Pavement, good
Rock, good. We need more types (especially for part materials and terrain)
Salt, good
Sand, same as part material
Sandstone, good
Slate, good. The part material looks less rough
Snow, good
Water, nothing changed
Wood, same as part material

Ok lets say the most effort was put onto the terrain materials than the part materials. I guess thats why the pictures in the first post looked extremely promising. The part materials however need more work.

Ok lets move on.

New Materials (Lowest Graphics):
RobloxScreenShot20210605_020110612
RobloxScreenShot20210605_020054652

Bricks look flat
Concrete too
Cobblestone’s tiling size is bigger
Rust looks same
DiamondPlate is dark and flat
Fabric is flat
Foil’s texture is actually more visible now
Glass looks the same
So is granite a bit
Grass is flat (the texture is cartoony which made it look flat)
Ice is ok.
So is marble
So is metal
So is pebble
Sand is flat now.
Same with slate
Wood looks ok
Same with WoodPlanks

Now for terrain materials:
Aspalt is ok
So is basalt
Brick are the same as part materials
So is cobblestone
Concrete is ok
Same with Cracked Lava
Same with Glacier
Same with Ground
Same with Ice, Leafy Grass, Limestone
Mud is flat
Pavement is ok
Same with Rocks, Salt
Sand looks flat
Sandstone is ok
Same with Slate (still looks rougher than the part, perhaps making them both rough like the terrain one)
Snow is ok
Wood too (also almost looks the same except no normals or specular maps)

Ok most of these materials look ok. But still needs to be improved like what I said with them on what they look like on high graphics. The major problem with these new materials that the textures are repeating. Pretty sure this is gonna get removed later on as its a “test” build of studio. However I really look forward to these new materials with the feedback I provided with them. If so, please improve the materials. I would be happy about it.

Oh sorry, i must’ve messed up. I’d just woken up like 10 mins before i wrote that so that’s probably why

I’ll change that

Not going to lie, these textures are very nice but I hate that we are forced too and the game that haven’t been updated in a long time might get bugs. Why can’t we just choose between Old Textrues and the New Textrues its really not that hard and for the Devs that haven’t been update their game and been offline in a long time should automatically choose the Old Textures.

I feel like a lot of people aren’t bothering to look back at the post, because people are still complaining that they are “pushing” this update without listening to the community. Go back read through the admin post and try to gain as much knowledge as you can before posting.

Speaking of the update not being forced I am actually very excited to see what solution roblox decides to go with here. I would love to see some kind of custom material implementation. Like where I could simply grab new materials off the tool box or something.

Material Sets; Custom Materials; A material can be created with a type - rocky or smooth; then you can add a Color map, normal map, roughness map etc…; then you can load those materials in; It is… perfection.
Then material sets can be on the market place. The legacy and new ones can be uploaded as ones with the orange model logo thing. With this, materials can be added etc…
Of course with special materials such as glass neon etc. those should be under a special set

Could this be somehow the same situation as the ‘oof’ sound? Did the original textures come from a source that might not have been totally legit? There seems to be a really hard push to totally change the look of these textures. Makes you think.

This is good. Thank you. These new materials are great, but they’re too different to directly replace old materials. You can tell this by the declining approval in feedback from the past 2 posts.

I would like to have some update on what the plan is for the material expansion mentioned in the oh my post. I would hope for old materials, new materials, material expansion, and even custom part materials.

Edit: I do have a complaint about the reflectance of some materials.
This is smooth plastic (top) and metal (bottom). Same color. Metal is super reflective.
The reflectance property doesn’t do anything to the new materials, but I would like to be able to have less reflective metal, especially since many of by sci-fi builds are very heavy in the material.

A lot of us have provided reasons as to why we dislike this update so much. Somehow they managed to make brick, and unusable texture, even more unusable. I’m genuinely peeved that they took nothing we said into consideration. No one wanted this update but they continue to push this overly cartoony and heavily stylized super flat look onto our games. Then they have sand, which is overly detailed and was actually fine as it was. Sand never needed any changes at all.

Let me refer you to my post above to see an example of how dumb this looks. New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build - #168 by Rosarias_Fingers

All of the depth has been taken out of these textures. If they want to update the textures, they should just make them under new textures rather than replacing the old ones. Everyone gets what they want in this scenario, and we can choose to change our textures if we really want to with a simple command in the command bar.

There’s no way.

I remember seeing the woodplanks texture somewhere on a PBR texture website, but I’m not sure. I also saw the brick texture in a recent TV news broadcast, but I seriously doubt Roblox took a picture of bricks in a classroom and used that for the new brick texture (it looked very similar though).

Why would anyone want to host the old WoodPlanks? They are the ugliest, flattest mess and have no PBR properties to them whatsoever. They’re the only material that I feel was significantly improved with the new material build.

I remember reading somewhere that the Oof sound had been purchased in the form of a CD with other various sound effects, and such. However, as we later discovered, the oof sound was owned by Tommy Tallarico.

So by that line of thought, if these original textures, were purchased through a similar means, such as from a site, or via a CD of graphical assets, Roblox may be wanting to replace them with ‘in house’ textures that can not be claimed to be someone else’s work.

I am just saying maybe its not so much of Roblox trying to force something on us, but rather the company being pro-active in avoiding potential copyright claims.

Maybe there is more to the story than Roblox being unreasonable, is all I am saying.

I totally agree.

By the way, I was talking about the new materials in the post I made. I cannot find the old woodplanks anywhere.

I may be able to find new woodplanks using a reverse image search though.

EDIT: nope, can’t find it

Time will tell, if there is no toggle or anything then it’s believable. For now, fingers crossed we can keep the old materials. I’m gonna go off and reverse search old materials right now.

Honestly, not the best idea. Most people, especially developers, prefer the old materials. Terrain, however, isn’t much of an issue to the community.

I really don’t see why we shouldn’t just EXPAND the roster of materials already available to us with this new update. We’d have so much more creative freedom if we were able to mix and match the new materials and the old ones to our liking to craft even more interesting looking builds.

This is what I’m hoping for!
I love the new wood planks and stuff, but the new diamond plate, grass etc. doesn’t look that great.

Being able to just choose between them would be awesome! It’d also be nice to see the completely new materials with no old counterpart without needing to sacrifice the old ones.

According to them, the load time for the materials if all were included would become significantly longer, which is honestly better than just straight up removing them.

To everyone claiming the loading times would “only increase by 3 seconds”, please, Where are your sources? Have you benchmarked it? No lmao. Therefore please quit throwing around some random numbers without any evidence, in attempt to strengthen your arguments.
