it’s like you jumped into a different game!
I for one hope they don’t give the choice for it to be on or off. It will give much more freedom to everyone to keep the old materials and still give us the new ones, and have them all exist in the same place.
Just to reiterate an important point that a lot of people have already brought up: Please, have an option to use/revert back to the original part and terrain materials.
Gorbachelli and I are the creators of Fantastic Frontier, one of the largest worlds (I believe) ever created on Roblox. We also have a huge update coming with new areas. Changing the part materials and terrain materials will completely change the look of our game for the worse, and if we were to even attempt to change the new materials to somewhat match what we have already created, it would take most likely dozens and dozens of hours of work. Possibly hundreds of hours of work. Changing these materials also negates all the time and effort spent tweaking colors, parts, and material usage to blend into a seamless product. If you just randomly throw out and replace old materials, you are completely throwing away the art direction that our game, and plenty of other games, have relied on. Please consider the work people have put in to make the old materials look good and beautiful. Gorbachelli has put in hundreds of hours doing just that.
So to answer “If you open a place you made 3 years ago, your materials will automatically upgrade with no way to revert to the current ones. Is this acceptable,”? No, it’s not acceptable. We 100% need a way to have access to the old materials. Wait to push this update until custom materials for both part materials and terrain materials would be added, or add the option to revert back or use the old materials. If we can upload our own materials, we could reuse the old textures and everything would work perfectly. You would get the best of both worlds, and you wouldn’t be compromising the artistic vision of so many games like you otherwise would by having no option to use old materials. There are so many examples already in this thread of why this is an issue for developers. Please, just allow an option for the old materials to be used. I know it may not be simple (though it seems like it could be a very simple thing to do), but it is truly something that is 100% necessary. What confidence can we have in Roblox that these materials won’t be changed in the future, and everyone once again has to spend countless hours tweaking their art just to have a semblance of what they had before (and in all cases, likely with a worse looking product than before)? I truly believe that if you were to update the materials without allowing developers access to the old materials, it would be highly upsetting, and outrageous even, to most artists who have seriously taken time to make good looking games on the Roblox platform. Please consider how important that is.
To make this simple, please do not push this update without an option to use the old materials. Ideally an option to upload custom materials for parts and terrain would solve both problems. Then you can always add new materials without depreciating anyone’s existing work.
ok, but how do i start using it? all im seeing is a readme file…
Why not add a toggle? Its only a good idea if the new textures AND the old textures co-exist. They are both in the materials menu.
This isn’t how the update works, they replaced the old part textures when they released this update. People want an option to revert the change / use the old materials.
I’m saying change how the update works. If you have to toggle your entire game between one set of materials or another, you will have much less freedom than if you could use all of them. Obviously this is more of a stretch, but the way I see it, the developers are mad about a problem and that is a solution.
I think I actually agree with @Blue_blockhead , If the textures could peacefully coexist so that we could have the old AND the new textures, without being forced to chose one set or the other, this would massively benefit everyone. You could use the high quality PBR wood with the familiar and very convincing look of the old sand for bedsheets. Again, this assumes they fix the fact that Quality 3 or below textures suck.
Ill say make the old materials and terrain legacy at some point so people can keep the look of past roblox if they choose to.
Download WinRAR for starters, go to the github, download the code as a zip file, unzip it into a new folder in your downloads or something, go into that new folder, find the RobloxStudio.exe and click it
Ah, I misunderstood. Infact I like this idea more. Just have all the materials, classic and new. Roblox should do this idea.
This is amazing!! As a developer I’m beyond excited to see this update come live. Roblox staff have done an amazing job with this update, I have no other words to describe it except that it’s amazing.
How can I download this to test it out? I have already downloaded the Github file. Thanks!
Unzip the folder and then open RobloxStudioBeta.exe
This is so true. Roblox is turning into another generic game because it doesn’t, or barely, listens to what the community wants.
Just to reiterate, there are issues with the graphics quality causing some textures to appear blank. The cobblestone is too large, the slate isn’t ‘slate’ looking, and the marble has strange squares. Also some textures having baked in colors really makes it difficult to use in lots of situations.
This update is giving me OLD mario vibes… Everything is so low quality and mushy, I don’t know how anyone could use these. I like the new materials, and we need an update, but I dont want my games looking like beef stew.
It’s probably low quality just for testing. When it fully rolls out, the textures may be of better quality.
I did that and it still doesn’t work. Is there something you forgot?
I don’t think so. I just unzipped and opened it, then it worked.
Alright, I’ll give my take on this update.
When this was first announced I was highly interested as it looked stunning overall. I was excited at the prospect of new materials. However, after seeing how the materials look in-game, my impressions are a little more mixed.
To start off, I’m really happy with the ‘Wood Planks’ and ‘Bricks’ materials. I use those quite frequently when developing, and I think that the new versions are massive improvements from the current. Really don’t have any complaints with those.
Now, on to the other stuff:
I think I can confidently assume that others agree with me when I say that developers should absolutely have the choice of what they want to change and what should stay the same. The entire design of the game should not be changed by force. Personally speaking, I have some models using materials that would not be compatible with the new versions.
Now, on to the Grass. You know when Car Windshields are covered with a strange frost-pattern? That’s what I think the Grass looks like. If I’m being completely honest I think the older grass-texture still looks better, reinforcing the statement that these new materials should not be forced on all parts. Instead, the developer should be able to choose if they want to change them. Also, some games might be aiming for a more classic or cartoony feel. Highly-realistic materials might not go too well with that.
One last thing: I think it might be a good idea if it were possible to include an option in Studio Settings to use the old materials. If someone was halfway through a build using the older ones, chances are they might want to make the rest of it with the same ones. I really can’t speak for everyone, but I do think that the old ones should still be accessible, especially if you were only making certain edits to a build or model.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with this update. The materials overall look pretty good, and some are a clear improvement over their predecessor. However, I do believe that materials should not change retroactively, only by the developer’s choice. I look forward to seeing how this update turns out.
