I found a bug: when I have more than 11 viewports, with the new materials applied to the contents are shown, studio crashes; when applied in non-beta, it doesn’t crash. This I think is strange because it doesn’t affect performance, then suddenly crashes.
I really agree on the sandstone part, it’s just really ugly and too reflective in my opinion. No way that’s coming in the final version.
I agree that the current slate looks like real rock but I think that the new texture still looks like rock but with more of a smoother finish but I also think that it looks too flat even though it has been made to look 3D. I have looked at the poll that @BuilderBob25620 posted and 68% of people prefer the old slate material (out of 41 voters so far). If more than half of the community prefer the old slate then 1. why don’t Roblox give us an option to switch between the 2 textures or 2. why don’t Roblox redo slate so that it is in between the old and new material. Overall, I think some textures should actually be 3D instead of looking 3D and we should get an option between the current and new materials.
The point is that the new materials would be faithful to the point that they do not alter the appearance of old work. It would be better if we urged Roblox towards staying faithful to old part materials, rather than scream tone deaf that we need both, when that simply isn’t true if they do things properly.
As much as I’d be okay with that, it’d still require renders to be edited to be up to date.
I can deal with that, but if I’m being honest, I do not expect Roblox to take the route of trying to make something accurate enough to please developers.
Keeping the old materials, while more bloated, would be the better alternative than risking them screwing something up and having bad ones as a result. Think of it as a better safety measure.
If they can actually pull off what you’re suggesting, though, I can deal with that.
I don’t exactly understand Github can somebody tell me how to download the materials (I’m on windows if that makes a difference)
Release Material Update Beta v1.1 · Roblox/material-update-beta · GitHub
If your on windows, click v1.1.Windows.zip
If your on mac, click v1.1.MacOs.zip
Extract the files, then look for RobloxStudioBeta. Open that then you’ll have it.
so some updates from the original V1 using a build I just built less than an hour ago.
Brick, it looks better, but it’s still too big (imho). If we had the ability to change the tiling of it, that would fix my personal gripes. If not, I’m gonna have to insert meshparts just to use my precreated pbr roblox bricks.
wood needs to be toned down still, sorry.
compared to my build in current gen materials, it looks like I’m on mars, not sandstone. It looks too out of place with roblox’s own PBR assets.
metals look nice, (no that’s not corroded metal. I’m using textures on it.)
Corroding looks much better.
Bricks should be changed oncemore, they are just too large.
One last thing. Wooden planks lost their rusticity/worn-ness. They look too shiny still, and look out of place in an anarchy/worn down town. Nothing a bit of texturing couldn’t fix, but the current texture has the pizazz the current one is missing.
This character looks super cool with the new terrain asphalt material, but it’s way too dark, this is the brightest I can get the color to look. Hope to see the terrain materials lifted a bunch too. My game has character customization and if I use this material it will severely limit player choice for colors that look good.
just tried the new terrain and it looks great but from a distance, it looks exactly the same. also, the wooden textures look a bit cartoonish. and last but not least can we get a bark texture.
EDIT:
sorry PeZsmistic didn’t mean to reply to you
Thanks for Making the adjustments to the color variety! It was one of my original things that bugged me in my original post and to Quote myself.
Though I feel like I must ask because Its something I feel that will effect how everyone builds on the platform all together.
I would like to know if the textures will be separate at launch, Like allowing Developers to use maybe both versions of the brick texture and or grass texture. If not possible let use choose between the tow of them.
If I would be able to know about this and I’m sure others as well, It would mean a whole lot to us all knowing our original styles are still present in the texture library.
The thing about the current terrain and textures… they’re iconic. They’ve grown classic in a way. So if you change these textures that so many are familiar with, you have to be careful not to make them a step down. These materials are a disappointment. Many, many people here are showing what their builds look like after they downloaded the textures. A huge portion of these are negative reception. Please don’t force this onto us. As someone who relies heavily on built-in textures, this could have a major impact for the worse for many, including myself.
v1.1 Textures.
- The brick’s color transfers over to the mortar and the bulging mortar
- It looks like it’s trying to go for cheap cement bricks, which; you don’t see a lot of.
A majority of people using brick, use it for housing, and Highrise buildings from what I see. - It feels even more 2D.
the Brick indentations make it look flat.
- The harsh shadows with direct light pointed at them feel unnatural and kind of like a Bevel tool-look in a photo editor. It’s too beefy in all the wrong places
*The scale compared to the player feels all wrong
- From a first person POV these bricks are Waaaaaaaay to big.
- It looks like our old flat decal wall looking at it from the side, and straight on.
I Love Foil!
But its not applicable for the same task as the old foil was.
However, I wish I could control its reflectance like Glass or Metal. It acts like both, and Wish I could control it, When it comes to old builds however, I think there should be an alternative with it considering how different it is.
It isn’t very Multi-use.
Needs to be a different texture to compensate for the old one’s use. This should be considered a 2.0
Grass = Mulch ≠ Grass
- Grass does not look like a good ground-cover.
- It is more of a loose straw, or mulch material.
- It looks like it was intended to be a loose straw material and not a groundcover.
Which is bad, since we need a ground cover.
Flat and Plastic slate
- I am not excited for this stucco-look slate.
We should have this as a different texture, or new one.
A more “Rocky-rough” material for slate would help integrity of slate.
Weird-non-plank Wood Planks
- I do not like these Flat-rubber looking planks.
- They do not pair well with the new Wood either
- the woodplanks look “Stamped” and not cut into separate planks.
- It doesn’t look natural seeing a large scale brick of it.
- Its more unfinished looking and yet fake and Non-detailed at the same time.
Splinter-wood. - reminds me of old doors
doesn’t keep intended color or depth
The grey-values on all these textures make them all look dull.
Less of the detail is carried by the Lighting, and its more carried by the Black-lined recoloring technique. It ended with everything instead of having shadows and “PBR lighting” the shadows are pre-drawn on, and so are the details. I got good results with the old materials lighting.
A majority of all the textures are very flat unlike what was the purpose
And The terrain-only materials I feel should be added to the list of usable recolorable ones.
I think there should be a completely new brick texture. It’s currently way to big and flat and clean. Brick usually isnt perfectly clean its usually a bit more dirty then in the new texture. Also I dont like how one brick is way smaller then the rest. It would be better if they both were the same size.
Also I think the wood texture should be more smoothed out because I think it’s too plasticy. Also theres way to much knots on the wood texture. I think I’ll be better if there were like 1 or 2. Also PLEASE make the wood plank texture nicely blend to the wood texture. It looks so much better. Like have a transparent ish wood texture ontop of the wood plank texture and it works perfectly fine and looks so much better and so easy to update.
Also can a polished wood and polished wood plank be added? Because the wood plank texture looks to old and the wood texture is a bit rough. Having polished versions would help more modern houses and furniture.
And as other people said the slate texture is way to smooth. It NEEDS to be more rough and rocky.
Also it would be amazing if there was a drywall material. PLEASE I beg you add one! And a shingle material would also be a great addition.
And a higher resolution corrosion material would go a long way.
And a corroded diamond plate would be a great addition aswell.
And please have a higher resolution fabric. Its way too blurry.
And add a cloth material please. I would love to use it for blankets
And the grass material really needs to be better. It doesnt look soft it looks a bit rough. And plasticy.
Also the ground texture looks way too smooth/flat which makes it look cartoony. And the leafy grass doesn’t blend well with the grass texture unlike before.
Also the cobblestone texture is WAY to flat. It’s a lot more worse on terrain especially
A bit late to the v1.1 party but I muted this thread because I think I was becoming dumber from reading most of the reactions to it
First notes: I am very glad that the colour scaling was removed. My builds look a lot closer to the pre-update originals, and I don’t have to manually edit the texture files to get grass that isn’t green!
The materials themselves also look a lot better. Slate looks a lot more applicable in other situations without the cracks, and so does sand without the massive pebbles in it. But some materials are still a bit subpar:
I’m not a fan of how plastic can only be viewed under a microscope. I had to put my camera right next to it to see anything but a flat surface.
Bricks are far too big in comparison to a player’s scale. The bricks in this image should be at least half of the size that they are now, similar to the old brick material
Corroded Metal is still a much lower resolution than the rest of the materials. (and it also tints the metal under it red for some reason, every part in this image is medium stone grey). I’ve mentioned this before but it’s probably my biggest gripe about this update
Height/normal map textures for wood (and now slate) are still really choppy and look like heightmaps imported from Minecraft
Despite these issues, though, v1.1 is better than v1.0 by a country mile. Can’t wait to see what comes from this update in the future
I don’t know why corroded looks so bad for you. I’m using a core i3 6100 + gtx 1650 and my corroded metal on settings 21/ingame max looks crisp as ever.
Could I see? That’s be cool
I strongly disagree with this sentiment. People have complained for years that Brick is far too small in its current state, and it is quite irritating to have people complain about it rather than suggesting that Brick should be split into, say, 2 different materials, one for large bricks and one for small, to keep everyone happy.
The wood planks are too big, everything looks like an image printed on to cheap plastic. Water looks way too blue and isn’t nearly as reflective/clear as it should be on highest graphics settings. This has potential to be a really good update and I hope it is when it is ready for release!
