Thanks for the detailed examples! Could you make sure to fill out the material survey listed in the announcement and upload the images there?
I have already done that around 30 minutes ago.
It would appear that Roblox is still attempting to force this materials update on every game once the beta concludes. If you’re like me, and you still wish for this to be optional, please make a note of this in the feedback requested above. I personally do not have games that will be effected negatively, but I’m sure we all know at least one developer who has a project that will be. Developers should not have to spend what could be hours repairing visual complications caused by an update meant to improve the PBR utilization of the platform. It is a waste of time and entirely inexcusable. That said, I look forward to whatever is next for this update.
As stated in the last posts about these new materials and as well as other peoples comments. Please keep the current and have these new ones as like an extension to the platform not everyone likes them, Plus there is nothing wrong with the current materials we have. I’ve tried this out and honestly some are good, HOWEVER the current materials are in my opinion better for some use case scenarios.
totally changing materials that we have been used to for years, also there being a lot of creations out there using these, I along others STRONGLY feel that replacing the old with these entirely is not the way to go. Allow us to chose between the two, I can’t see how hard it would be to just make a “folder system” with “normal” and " new" these names of course are just examples.
As a builder on the platform since 2013 I have many different builds I have done (most unfinished but still)
Also ones I’m currently working on, it would be a pain to go through them and change things to fit what I had in mind when originally building it, I’m sure others would agree on this.
Please listen to your community on thing’s they bring up.
Before
After
as you can see its different, does it look good? yes its ok, but it is not my intended look and feel.
before
after, looks good in this case
however with some other builds I did not like how the new looked. made them darker or textures just made things look weird for what it was.
I cannot upload all of the images I took showcasing the new materials on my and my friend’s existing work to the feedback survey, so I’m putting them here and then linking this in the survey. This post can also serve to show other developers the difference.
EDIT: Much of what you see is from old games and hangouts, but some of it is newer, namely the characters. This post helps to compare how it impacts newer and older content.
I think it’s quite obvious, in my photos, that the old materials are much superior in almost every photo. (Good lord, Jotaro’s poor jacket…)
Apologies for bothering you, however, the feedback survey doesn’t actually like having images uploaded to it.
I took several photos today and tried attaching them, and I got either “File too large” or when they would send, the neighboring photo wouldn’t send and as a result I could not show comparisons. There is also a file limit.
I still don’t understand why new materials must be forced. Why can’t we have a legacy mode to keep & make this optional for builds that actually have this in mind?
Having to integrate new materials with builds that do not have these in mind or never will (think older games) won’t retain the same feel and a lot of the issues that people are having on this thread can be fixed if this wasn’t forced & instead became an optional feature that developers can use if they choose to. It seems very user-unfriendly to force this on people given that it’s mainly a stylistic change.
I am a bit curious as to what resolution these new textures are in and if we’ll be able to upload 4K or higher res images in the future. If someone could answer incase I missed it, that would be nice.
Let me ask DevRel. Thanks for telling me!
They’re all 1k which is the same as the og. 1k isn’t really that low res and the fabric looks blurry because it doesn’t tile that much. I won’t blame you if you dont belive me so heres a screen shot for proof. Im showing the wood material because it looks high res. (It shows paint.net cause I made it so it always opens in paint.net because I’ve opened them before)
And heres for the corroded metal material which looks very blurry
The only thing that isn’t 1k is the terrain textures which is 2k because it’s a atlas. So the materials are just one big material and needs to be so it isn’t super blurry. Which is why terrain textures look more low res compared to parts. And the normaldetail isn’t 1k because opening it up it doesn’t need to be. It’s 512x512 btw.
I have raised the max file size. Sorry about the inconvenience!
Thanks.
I just hope whoever’s getting the survey is gonna check the post I made, cause man, I had a lot to say and I really don’t wanna re-write that.
You could just copy and paste it in.
I transferred the new materials to my Roblox client and tried it out in a few games. One of the things I noticed most is Lumber Tycoon 2. The materials changed the feeling of the game so much and I’m not sure if the players are ready for that.

IMO it didn’t really change much of the feeling though.
ROBLOX-Please add an option when this releases to toggle ON, and make it game-specific.
Funny how they put R15 and R6 optional, but they never do with materials. It’s whack. It’s also funny how they make it so you can have custom animations but not custom materials. …
Roblox you are going to make a LOT of developers and players unhappy if you don’t make this optional…
Disclaimer: To make it clear, this is NOT a rant against the new materials and the work that has gone into them, but rather the consideration of forcing them onto all games, past and present, where they simply do not work and ruin the designs of developers.
The fact that Roblox is still even considering forcing these new materials on all games, old and new, is mind-boggling and pathetic. Almost every post I’ve seen on this thread has included some form of request to keep the old materials available, and the fact that you are STILL considering ignoring all of us developers (wording of the questions in the poll also) is both disgusting and appalling.
The significant difference in design and aesthetic shows the old materials MUST be kept around if Roblox is to continue to power imagination and creativity among developers. Roblox as a platform, and engine, has grown exponentially since October 28th 2013, the last time the materials were changed, and in that time, millions of hours worth of building, designing, scripting have taken place on here. To destroy, redesign and change the style and architecture of all of this work with NO options or considerations given, goes completely against everything Roblox stands for. Furthermore, why bother at all adding features such as the Compatibility lighting mode (2019), and SmoothPlastic (2014) to your platform to ensure backwards compatibility when you can’t even seem to give the same consideration to materials on a whole?
@RBLXImagineer @JoshSedai PLEASE do not ignore us. Forcing new materials on all places will cause unimaginable amounts of backlash and anger from your community.
We hear your feedback, and I would just ask that you fill out the survey especially with specific examples of where the new materials are a breaking change for you. Right now, RBLXImagineer and I are working to gather data and there’s a different decision maker.
I can’t, I already sent in the survey and it’s not saved anywhere, so I’d have to totally rewrite it.
I have to agree with this in it’s entirety.
While I harbor no ill will toward RBLXImagineer or anybody responsible for the creation of the new materials, I am absolutely baffled that despite the overwhelming amount of people in this thread who have expressed a desire to continue to permanently be able to use the old materials, Roblox has still not confirmed an option. With how many people there are here, not confirming one already seems unimaginably ignorant from whoever is responsible for the decision-making up at HQ.
There has been a massive amount of feedback regarding the new materials, but more specifically, that they cannot replace the old ones in versatility and visual style. Roblox would be ruining the artstyle of almost every classic game and requiring a total rework of games still being updated. The community has even come forth and suggested very simple, yet effective solutions to this problem, such as maintaining the old materials, and then taking the new ones and turning them into separate, totally new materials. Why these solutions have gone ignored and unaddressed evades me, especially considering that this update claims to be relying on community feedback.
The way the unconfirmed toggle sounds, right now, is that it would mean you can no longer make new games using the old materials or update ones using the old materials, and they would be “set in stone”. This would be a detriment to anybody trying to update their game or make new ones and would make such a toggle borderline useless.
I sincerely hope that whoever is responsible for pushing this update is prepared to deal with what I can only describe as hordes of angry developers, should this launch in a way that forces these new materials in one way or another. I imagine it would be downright overwhelming.
