Next Gen Studio - Preparing for Takeoff! [Beta]

Hi Creators,

Last summer we released the Next Gen Studio Preview Beta and, since that time, we have been working non-stop with rolling updates to get everything ready for prime time. We have continuously listened to your feedback (thank you!) and have done our best to incorporate your ideas and suggestions where we can.

The past few months have been mostly focused on ensuring functional parity with the old UI. Our goal was that any action or tool that Studio supports should be accessible through the new interfaces but there were two big missing pieces we’ve now addressed…

Play/Testing Controls

Our initial release only allowed you to run a solo play test. Our design and engineering teams worked closely together to unify all the test and debug modes, including team test, into one convenient interface. In addition we fixed up numerous issues the old UI had with properly enabling/disabling button states, icons, etc. with our all new Contexts system.

We also wanted these new controls to be in a persistent, easily accessible place in the main window and we decided to take the space that was formerly occupied by Quick Access. Which brings us to the next big piece…

Custom Tabs & Toolbars

Customization has always been at the heart of the Next Gen plan. You could add actions to the Quick Access area but there was no control of the ribbon tabs and toolbars. You now have full control over what tabs you see, what tools are on those tabs, and how they are displayed. Just right click in the ribbon area or on a tab to get started.

Creating a new tab is easy! From there you can add any combination of Studio and plugin tools.

Want to tweak the default Home tab? Duplicate it and then add or remove any tools you wish.

What about hiding or reordering tabs? You can do that quickly via the Manage Tabs dialog. Just right click the ribbon to access.

With the ability to access any task that the old UI can provide, we’re beginning the transition to the new Beta interface as the default UI, starting with automatic enrollment this week. If you were autoenrolled into the Beta because of this, please visit the original announcement for more details on the Next Gen Studio architecture that supports all of these new UI capabilities.

Achieve Next Gen Zen

Our next goal is to leave Beta in early June, when we’ll fully replace the old UI with this one. We have a short list of improvements and fixes to make but we strongly recommend you leave this Beta feature turned on and start adjusting your muscle memory to the new UI.

Here’s a few tips:

  • Don’t forget about the Menus. We have moved a lot of functionality from the old toolbars to menus. We believe this is a highly efficient use of screen space and menus are always available at the top of your window or screen.
  • Don’t forget about Shortcuts. If you find yourself doing the same actions frequently, consider using keyboard shortcuts. There’s no faster way to activate an action and they’re especially great for repetitive tasks.
  • Customize your tabs. We have provided the ability to duplicate system tabs, edit your custom tabs, and hide any tabs you don’t need or use. You can put together tool combinations that have never been possible before.

While we plan to improve the space utilization very soon, today you can make the most of your UI space by hiding tool labels or even hiding the entire ribbon…

We want your feedback; if there’s any functionality you think we’ve missed, or any improvements you’d want us to make with the new UI please let us know.

Known Issues

  • We will be addressing the overall spacing concerns before we leave Beta. The default state will be much more reduced and we’re hoping to introduce even more compact options in the near future.
  • We will be allowing the scrolling of toolbars and getting rid of the overflow dropdown menu.
  • Overall colors and styling are mostly placeholders. We are working closely with our design team to incorporate the new design system. You will likely see this appear on the Start Page first and the ribbon interface will follow along shortly.
  • Tooltips have a few display issues. This is a whole new tooltip system and we’re still tweaking things here.
  • Menu organization is still a work in progress. We are still trying to finalize where some things are in the menus and naming.
  • You can’t currently add complex controls like the drop down buttons (we call them SplitButtons) and the snapping UI to custom tabs yet. But as a workaround, you can duplicate a system tab with those controls and modify the duplicate.
  • Rearranging tools on a tab requires a right clicks for now. We hope to add drag and drop in the near future.

One of the major ones which is very very annoying for me is, say I accidently hover over something (or, even worse, purposefully for something) and then go off the studio tab, the tooltip will display over everything else on my screen. It is very frustrating and when you have multiple studio tabs open it becomes a real nightmare to handle.

This should be high on the bug tracker, it is very frustrating for me.

I turned this on earlier this week because I had the same thought and then an hour later turned it back off because it felt terrible to use. Icons are blurry, drop downs are weird, and some of the things that were put into menus are things I use fairly regularly.

I’m actually very surprised that this is moving forward with a release, let alone next month. It feels like a downgrade in many regards and it really does not feel finished. Why is this leaving beta in June?

This would be nice and all but unless you fixed this

Please do not force it on me

Also unless your revamping every single window I see no point in releasing this yet as the current studio works fine and better however if a revamped terrain editor and such came out then it may be more enticing

don’t you dare automatically enable this…

I don’t know if its just a placebo, but the new Lua UI feels ever so slightly slower and less responsive than the QT UI? Wasn’t sure if it was just me but I’ve noticed it with many of the UIs that were ported to lua (such as the terrain plugin editor).

Overall, the redesign just doesn’t feel practical, as if it was made by some UI designer who’s never actually used the engine to actually develop games.

Finally glad to see this one going out of the beta! It’s been a whole year full of improvements and updates (and feedback), hopefully, the new design comes out soon!

This new UI doesn’t look too bad, but I do prefer the old studio UI to be honest. This looks a little bit too simplistic and “corporate” in my opinion, but it is definitely cleaner-looking.

As long as you aren’t hiding important options behind a sea of dropdown menus and toolbars, I think we’ll be okay. Hopefully it’s more performant than the old stuff, because right now it is PAINFULLY slow.

Looking good so far, looking forward to seeing more progress!

I never expected to want this, but it’s an amazing feature! As someone who’s very organized, I’m thrilled it’s being added.

Hello !

Yeas we indeed need the compact version of the tabs

Currently, there’s a lot of unused empty space. Tabs with small icons but no text must be more compact than the ones with text, but they currently take up the same amount of space (I saw this mentioned under “Known Issues”, so I know it’s acknowledged).

Personally, I really love the current (or soon-to-be old) Studio UI and got used to it ways too much to ever like an new overall change as brutal as this one…

A legacy version of the UI would be much appreciated thb

The best is when I close the tab section and rely on the small customizable shortcut buttons (plugins and studio functions) it’s clean and efficient.

The DPI issue is not in known issues?

yeah, custom tabs/toolbars are a godsend. I bet that’ll be a hell of a thing to have.

So far the only thing I’m not a fan of is the look of the buttons… It just feels really off, I guess. Maybe it’s just me.

No way I am not gonna use this, I hate the UI and I will be finding a way to bypass this and keep the old UI. I am refusing to have this in my Roblox Studio. The old studio is WAY much better then this. I rather download a Cracked version of the old studio to NOT have this ugly thing.

Preparing for the replies that show how the community will immediately start hating without reading a fancy section called “Known Issues”.

I like to hear your initiatives to improve the UI. But, please, do not hide too many things behind dropdowns like with the explorer. Remember that the old UI didn’t have many dropdowns, and doing so would make the change very drastical for people that hold on the old UI.

Anyway, do you have some perfomance benchmarks to show us whether the new UI is more performant or not? That would be nice to know. But still: if I could, I’d stay on the old UI to keep working faster.

I rather have the old UI then this garbage

Good luck keeping this when the FFlag is removed possibly after July when migration is complete.
