Next Gen Studio UI Preview is here! [Beta]

Hello, loving the new UI!

I’m experiencing a flickery tool description box that hovers over other programs I switch to (like google). I fix it by going back into studio and moving my cursor from what it was just on. The box flickers in a kind of amusing way.

The other thing is for features like multi-client testing or opening the physics tab, I have to switch to the old UI, though I’m sure you are adding all of the old tabs in right now.

Also this arrow next to the play button is too small and I don’t hit it half the time:

Keep up the good work!

@MeshOfPaul I brought this up before but I got no response. The undo/redo buttons are extremely important to my workflow and they are missing in the new UI. I never click on them, but I constantly glance over at their enabled/disabled states in the top left to gauge where I am in the undo history tree. Using the beta makes me feel uncomfortable because I have no way to see if I have undoed/redoed by accident, or if I have accidentally made a change. I find studio in particular is very vulnerable to making accidental changes over other software.

I’ve been following progress on the new UI for several months and I think for the most part it’s great. However this simple feature is stopping me from using it.

I hope the buttons are reintroduced by default or are introduced in some way through custom tabs. Again, I don’t care about being able to click them - I always use keybinds. I must have some way to view the enabled/disabled states of undo and redo.

I prefer the ribbon styling shown in this image much more than the one in the preview.
The selected button is darker, not lighter, and the corners are less rounded compared to the preview. This makes it look much more professional overall.
Hopefully the current style can be adjusted to reflect this more.

Also, along with custom tabs: allow us to add buttons to this menu on the main ribbon bar as well. This will give us a good replacement for the Quick Access Toolbar. This has been mentioned several times in this thread and is particularly important to me.

Also to your question @BandolPole: I believe they answered it somewhere, but I can’t find it at the moment. I think it will be added at some point, but not in the near future.

Thanks for the extra information!

You will be able to add these back with custom tabs. More details coming soon.

I’m glad to hear you’re using key binds and your need to see the “state” makes sense. Maybe we can think of some new ways to show that in the future without relying on the buttons. The undo/redo architecture could benefit from a revisit.

Yes we have the tooltip “clean up” issue ticketed and prioritized. Hoping we can get the final fix out sooner than later.

Play Test controls is one of our biggest priorities right now. We will be bringing in the ability to do any of the test modes (Play Solo, Local Server, Team Test, etc.) into that new area of the UI. I will make sure the note around hit areas for the buttons are looked at.

I have to agree with him, a lot of times I accidentally started a solo session instead of a server or a team create session due to the arrow button being very small.

New colors will come in with time and the dark theme background is definitely darker. Generally all of the current styling was speculated before our design system team had finalized colors, grids, etc. It was kind of our best guess that also didn’t look super out of place beside old UI.

The design system is getting more refined each day and we’ll be applying those changes as we get the thumbs up. I did get a sneak peek of Studio testing the darker background color all over and it does just feel nicer!

Yes that’s the “north star” we are working towards. It’s going to take some time to get there.

Just wanted to pop in here and say I love how the cursor now changes to the “click” state (or whatever it’s called) when you hover over buttons. Feels so much nicer

Not sure if someone’s already said this, sorry if they have

Is it me or i can’t lock stuff due to it being blocked?

Hmmm… yeah something a little weird going on here in the latest release. I was able to use the drop down to enable the tool mode which lets you click on the actual thing to lock/unlock.

Seriously, why make it like this, i preferred the old one lol.

I think there’s something wrong with this tool in the new UI.

The intent is you can hit the top level button to toggle lock/unlock or you can use the “select object to lock” mode to quickly click into the Viewport on different objects. I’ll see if this is new or a known issue.

Simplified for new creators, but a pain and spanner in the works for what should be the main focus, the EXISTING CREATORS. The current layout is completely fine. Here I am struggling to find private server settings in the fancy creator hub or whatever, god what is going to happen when the whole studio layout is altered.

I think there should be a permanent option to toggle between both UIs in order to be good for new creators and the existing ones, instead of forcing us to use one or the other.

Yes I agree. I don’t believe there’s “one to rule them all” that works for newbies and existing creators. I’m even doubtful there’s one solution that works for all existing creators.

Which is why our default state will cater to new creators, who don’t have the experience to know what does what, and then we will have customization for experienced creators know exactly what they want.

We will have an extremely early version of customization out in the next couple weeks and we’ll make an announcement about it. I look forward to seeing if that works well for you.

this screenshot found in a devforum post just questions me.

how did they even have the new Explorer & Properties widgets while others don’t??

just why??

tell me why is it at RDC there are MULTIPLE screenshots of the full Next Gen Studio but we’re stuck with this weird old & Next Gen UI mix???

i found this.

this.

AND THIS.

how did they got a pretty Studio UI but developers don’t?
look at the 2nd image, it’s beautiful to see the full Next Gen UI, especially Toolbox & Explorer which look stunning when it’s fully applied.
