No motivation, at all

Title explains it all.
I am about to give up on making games on roblox since I have almost little to no motivation. I always want to make some game I thought would be really cool(such as the game I’m making now, a medieval game set in 867) but just give up when I know its almost impossible without going on devforum and asking people to help me(I know it’s perfectly fine to go and ask for help, but most of the time I need people to write scripts for me, which isn’t allowed). All I do is just grab free models, watch tutorials I don’t even understand, and make really bad “builds”. All this makes it very, very hard to get the motivation I need to make that “really cool” game I want.
So what should I do? Give up?

Definitely don’t give up. But if you really do have no motivation, then just take a break for a while, and if you do have a love for game development then soon enough you’ll find motivation again. You don’t need to force yourself to open up Roblox Studio and try to make something.

And if you’re struggling with actually making things then, although it sounds cliche, just keep practicing. Everything you make might start by looking really bad, but eventually, it will look better and you’ll start to be able to script and build on your own without help.

(A good place to find answers to scripting questions is the Roblox Documentation website, it’s saved me countless hours.)

Practice. Work to make more games, follow more tutorials; if you don’t want to do that then just pour your heart and soul into one field. Make some other games first, gain experience, and then start working on whatever ideas you have. I have my own motivations struggles as well, but go ahead and make a checklist or something for your games and the features you want to add. Just invest a little more time, it might make a difference.

Don’t just leave entirely, maybe you’re just experiencing creative burnout; take a break and get some more ideas, like features you might want to add to your game. All of this advice seems very overused, but trust me, it really was useful for me so it might be to you.

I started off barely making a gun work, but it took me 2 years to script well where I can work woth guns, Also I use the documentation instead of devforum, also a good thing to learn is math, like bezier curves are used for camerw interplation, and some algorithms which can really boost coding, best thing to do is learn to create your own equations and algorithms, also I use the documentations, because it doesnt tell you how to code, you have to understand it by reading it. Even tho 2 ywars of experience I still have 4 tabs open at a time, which I believe is ok, I used to have like 20 tabs open, but now I can remember them from the top of my head, but it took me a long way to do this, I spend 2 months to learn tweenings and 5 months to get a good grasp on datastore and good ways to manage it. so the best thing you can do is practice.

I don’t think he’s asking for how much you have accomplished.

I myself have not had much motivation lately either. Just take a break, that’s what I’m doing. It feels nice to not open studio for a bit. Talking with friends and touching grass is nice for a change.

Or you can find some motivation boosts. For me personally, something that boosts my motivation is something made extremely well by someone. It gives me tons of ideas.

I have the same problem as you.Unfortunately, not everyone is given something. I also want to create interesting games, but I feel that this is not mine. You probably, like me, have experienced burnout. During burnout, you are better should rest and do something else. Maybe it’s temporary for you, but maybe not. The hardest part is making games alone. I also plan to stop making games.Cuz i feel that its not mine. So,maybe creating games is not yours? I think that you should think about this.

Everything just depends on you.

If you only have started Roblox game development and instantly went to create “a really cool game” instead of a learning project, then it’s no surprise that you’re getting stuck, frustrated and losing motivation. Why not try a new clean baseplate and see how much can you build on that on your own and only then move that knowledge to your dream project? If you say you don’t understand tutorials, you either watch the wrong ones or you need to figure out the very basics on your own.

I have many years in “traditional” game development, plenty of “amateur” programming experience and, yet, I started my first Roblox project from the official guide on how to detect if a tile was stepped on and slowly building on that while learning how engine and Lua functions. Dream project(s) can wait.

I am HAPPY (not literally lol) that ur doing a bad job at first you know why?
Because it’s NORMAL you’ll never be amazing at something you never did unless it’s sleeping. Keep trying otherwise if you give up I Guarantee that you’ll fail, we all did terrible as we were learning

Think good and it will be good : )

I have the exact same problem and this is how I deal with it.

If you have no motivation, TAKE A BREAK. Sometimes the brain just can’t figure out something because it looks too overwhelming. Breath air, refresh your mind, it will really help you organize things and imagine new ways to do your game that you otherwise wouldn’t have considered.

If you see that the project you are working on is too hard, it is simply because you are not organized enough. Whenever you have a big project in mind, don’t rush to Studio and start draft code for nothing. Keep thinking about it for weeks/months, and you will have a way more realistic way of seeing how your game should be. After so, give yourself a deadline, A REALISTIC ONE, and make a list of everything that you have to do. Then, highlight the parts that you aren’t 100% sure that you can do by yourself (don’t be arrogant, highlight even if you understand 90% of it ;)). All the parts highlighted are the parts that are going to be the obstacle along the way, so why not get rid of them as soon as possible?

Here is an example that happened to me lately: I wanted to make a Gun System thats is 100% ran in Replicated Storage. I saw that everyone was using metatables to accomplish it. Before even trying to start, I watched 3 tutorials on it to be sure that I wouldn’t lose motivation.

Overall, im not asking you to learn 100% of roblox, but you most stay realistic in your ideas and your deadlines. Otherwise your motivation will greatly suffer and your ideas will just be forgotten.

learn a single skill instead up just jumping into making games something like UI scripting or building get better at 1 thing it’s much easier. also pick something you enjoy maybe try out a bunch of different skills and find one you like but don’t feel. stressed to get better just do it for fun. frequently take breaks so you don’t get burned out. maybe once your good at 1 skill then you can start working with other people with different skills to work on games you might find it more enjoyable to work with more people.

that’s all I could think of just sat down and wrote this. but personally, I love modelling and I enjoy just making models even if it’s not for a game. I still do work on some games by myself for fun, but I take my time and get help from other people for things. I also try and learn a few things because I want to have made most of the game so I can feel like it’s mine. but even just doing 1 thing for fun and once your good at it then working on a game could be great too

Thank you all so much for replying. I am genuinly thankful. I will take a much needed break from roblox studio, and try to practice animating. You are all great people.
Once again, Thank you.

I have tips for animation for when you decide to come back

I’m also having this problem. What I’ve found is it’s nice to have a little hobby or activity when you’re feeling unmotivated- like those silly games or making recipes! For me, that has been making cupcakKe remixes (lol?).

I’ve also found that instead of always trying to work on a project, because this isn’t life critical, why not only spend an hour a week (divided…) when you feel a sudden urge of motivation?

Finally, you should search for inspiration. This could be code-wise by studying others code, or just playing other games!

There is no such thing as failing. It’s only a hurdle in your marathon of success.

Nope. Don’t give up.

One thing I use to regain motivation is inspiration. However, it seems like you’re uncomfortable asking for certain types of help:

It is expected for you to have already made some code in the scripting support category. Practice makes perfect (permanent). You should ask how to design the systems before asking for help making them.

Another thing you can try is taking a break from this large project to start a smaller project that you have the skills for already. This really helps and prevents you from getting overwhelmed with development, while also improving your skillset. Keep in mind the project’s goal should be a little challenging, but not too challenging.

#resources:community-resources is something you should try instead of this. It’s really helpful and the resources are usually well designed (if they’re not, you’ll see it in a later reply).

For tutorials, I strongly recommend #resources:community-tutorials, as it explains everything in detail (most of the time). Additionally, in the replies there will likely be answers to questions you have, and you can ask your own questions on the topics.

Again, the DevForum is here to help. Heard of #help-and-feedback:building-support and #help-and-feedback:creations-feedback? You can ask others how to make your builds better and they will respond with good advice. This will not only improve your builds, but also collect feedback from others. #help-and-feedback:building-support in particular is for stuff like “How do I set the increment?” and “What does the transform tool do?” A tip for building is to simply make the studs increment 1 while you’re starting out. It has helped me a lot with my builds, even though I suck at building.

You also might be able to build a team for your project. This will allow for closer communication with your peers, and you can ask for help with ease. However, there’s other problems that come with working with a team (other and problems are two separate links).

What are you struggling with? What can you currently do? Start with the second question and begin there, and for the first question understand what it is that makes it difficult so you know how far it is down the road from where you are right now.

I’m going to start of by saying game development is not easy and it takes discipline and commitment. That means forcing yourself to work on your game when you don’t feel like it. Imagine you think of a really good game idea, you begin developing it but… you lose motivation… what happened??!.. you were so motivated to work on this. This is what we call “giving up on games”. Forget scripting and building, this is one of the toughest parts of game development and it absolutely sucks when it happens. However over the years I’ve gotten some tips to keep your motivation:

  1. Don’t reveal too much about your game to your community
  2. Hire other developers, this makes you want to work on your game. Being a solo developer is extremely difficult especially when it comes to motivation.
  3. Don’t do multiple projects at once, put your focus into one singular project and release it as best as it can be
  4. Make a game that you will enjoy making, don’t make a game just to profit of it. Make a game you are enthusiastic about!
  5. This isn’t really a tip but one way I keep myself motivated is from motivational videos to boost my dopane levels.
  6. If you give up on a project, don’t feel bad about it, at least you learnt something new.

For all you solo developers, one main issue you will come across is thinking of a game ideas. This is the most important part of your game. My best tip to give you is to choose 2 different games on Roblox and combine them. Do this until you get a game concept you really like. Another tip: sit down at your desk, get a piece of paper and pencil, write several game ideas then choose the one you like the most. Game development can be fun and dull at the same time. It’s important to have commitment and passion for your projects. Good luck and I hope my advice helped!

Personally I think going out with friends and working on your game should be prioritised because you should go live a little and enjoy life instead of being an introvert. It’s best to avoid games as well as they’re a waste of time but they’re okay if you don’t get addicted to them for ages. You don’t need more time, you need less distractions.ll

Bro fr if you ain’t got the motivation just take a break, not forever but long enough to regain enough motivation, energy, and brain power to learn again. I didn’t know how to make games for along time I’d do the same thing, nab free models and follow tutorials! I found coding to be a nightmare, but when I came back with a fresh mind and a clean slate coding literally clicked with me in like 3 days and I was off scripting multiple things. Yes I needed help so I went off to the forums and roblox documentation but that helped me learn more. I’m still learning new and efficient techniques with coding. Seriously just take a break until you really feel like creating something truly awesome. :sunglasses:

I recommend you to make something like a game remaster. Take some time. You will get some ideas for your OWN new game. You can play some games and see what they use. Treat it like it’s fun. Don’t try too hard. I got my ideas from other games. With watching tutorials - i recommend you to watch Gnomecode’s tower defense game tutorial. He explains really well it. Or you can just have fun with your own scripts. Take a break untill you get motivated. While on break - try to think of game ideas and what would satisfy you.
