Observation Window from Portal

I experimented a little with the refractive properties of glass and made the window from the observation room you may normally encounter in Portal maps. I thought this could be nice to share on the potential of the glass material.

Woah, that’s really cool. Is the glass shaped in that lined pattern?

Thats amazing, how did you do that?

I exploited the fact that you cannot see other glass parts behind a glass part itself- along with a grouping of rotated lines of glass vertically.
It’s a little part intensive, but take a free model to experiment!

To an extent, kind of. They look much more like window blinds in a certain angle.

After trying this out for myself I noticed that using cylinders instead of block parts yielded better results.

And so it is- even matches the picture from the game itself better!

(Left side is blocky, right side is with cylinders)

I’m a huge fan of portal 1-2, and this brings back many memories of me staring at the observation windows wondering who could’ve sat behind them aha.

I’ve actually managed to get a similar effect, although I should resize each of the cylinders to get a closer look to the actual window.

That’s really cool! Bigger cylinders seem to work even better than what I had it seems.

Smaller cylinder time!

EDIT:
here it is!

Also, even my smallest cylinder window is only 37 parts without unions.

Rad design!
