Opinion on how this headset's microphone should look? (Decided)

In Blender, I’m making this headset with one speaker and a microphone in the style of a classic movie reel. Problem is, what would you say I should make the microphone look?

The cylinder objects are the reel, and the rectangle is where the microphone starts. Should I have it here like a conventional one?

…or have the start where the film would be to have it trail off like a movie film strip?

EDIT: Thanks for the info everyone! I’ve decided to go with the second version.

Well, you should bend the mic part closer to the face.

I know that, but I was asking where the microphone should start.

My mic comes more from the bottom, like your bottom one. Hopefully that helps!

From what I have seen after doing some research, pretty much every headset looks like the top one. For that reason I highly recommend you go with the top one. If you are going with the bottom one, I would at least say to rotate the extending part so that it looks the same as the top one.

Here are some examples of popular headphones.

As you can see, whether the shape of the headphones are circular or more rectangular seems to be the deciding factor of the microphone location. Hope this helped!

Realistically, the mic would come off the side as in the first image, but there isn’t really a huge suspension of disbelief required to have the second image work, and stylistically I think that’s far more important

Second one

You should probably create a poll for this, since it’s more or less personal preference.

I think the 1st one is more accurate in terms of how headphones and a mic would actually look, but the 2nd one matches your aim of making it look like a classic movie reel.

Ultimately its up to you which one you prioritise; how realistic it should be (1st) or how stylistic it is (2nd) like @plasmascreen said.

Most professional headphones and others with removable microphones have the mic socket on the bottom. The cheaper and a lot of “gamer” branded ones (which are just 10x more expensive chinese rebrands) have them come from the side as it’s less expensive to implement a hinge than a good quality bendable one.

I interpreted the 2 inside cylinders to both be part of the speaker itself, which the microphone would not attach to, in contrast to the casing.

You’re right though
