It seems like all the top games have a very low player count per server, like 10-20, is that a performance choice or a game mechanic choice?
It feels like my game would benefit from a larger numbers of users on it, like 40-50, is there any reason I should not keep the server set to 50 players?
It depends on multiple factors, one being how well optimized your scripts are. If you think they are up to the task then I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to bump up the count to at least somewhere between 70-100.
I’m pretty sure your game is an obby. I personally feel the lower amount of players per server for an obby or race or in that genre is much better for optimal game mechanics, player preference. I suggest around 8 - 20 per server is a right place to be at.
Every game is different. Many games like arsenal have reasons such as lag starting to appear or the game being crowded and overwhelming. You should base your game off the genre, performance, etc.
Optimization varies from game to game. With a lot of players in a game, you should naturally expect a less optimal game (e.g. lag for players). I can’t really give you one metric for how many player you should have, try testing with different amounts of players and where problems start to happen. Assuming your game is fairly optimized though, you shouldn’t have a technical problem with higher amounts of players.
It’s sort of an obby. I guess it’s closer to a cross between parkour and speed run. Maybe more like sonic? From all the play testing I’ve done it seems like the more players there are the more fun it is. Even with 20 it feels like there should be more on the map.
The game’s player count should be based on the amount of players that your game works best with. For example, a party game would be better with a smaller player count, but a battle royale would be better with a higher player count. If the game can’t handle the amount of players that you need, you should try to optimize the game rather than lower the player count.
It also depends on how big the map is. A bigger map should have more players, unless you want players to be spread apart.
