People failing to connect to game (2 out of every 3 times)

People seem to be getting either a white screen or a “this game has shut down” every time they try and join my game, I’m getting the same issue. This has really only happened recently, as in within the past week or possibly sooner. To repro, just join the game.

The only thing that could be even mildly intensive is the water, which a lot of users including myself seem to have a little bit of trouble running, but as it’s a complicated graphical feature I’m sure roblox does their best. The point remains though that players can’t seem to join my game for the most part, and I’ve done nothing in the past week to change the graphics around or add to the part count.

Also, rather than loading the voxels a few at a time, as I think was done in previous versions, it seems to load bricks and instances first, and then try and load 2 million voxels of water right after that. The only thing is though I don’t have that many voxels of water, unless roblox has recently made one voxel equal to four voxels.

Tried to join and my computer almost crashed. 100k+ parts, 6m+ voxels, etc.

There’s nowhere near that amount in the game, much less voxels. I can see how maybe the part count could get to something like 60k on a long running server with a playercount of 20 or so, where there are people with a lot of buildings who havent left, but anything above that is near impossible, not to mention the voxels, there is no way the voxel count could be that high, there’s no way for players to generate voxels.

Do you have any terrain generating algorithms in place?

None, the only terrain used is in the map when the server starts, none is ever generated.

I’m still having this issue, despite it disappearing when I restarted the server, it seems to be happening to other people randomly. Some can join and some can’t. Maybe the wrong data is being sent to the client?

Some people have been reporting this issue happening in Super Bomb Survival. I also created a new game recently with a baseplate and some parts and the instances count went over 2000 and took a long time to load. No clue if that has anything to do with this.

I have this problem with my own place, i only updated a script, and the woxels and instance count, went sky high.

People are giving me a lot of heat over not being able to join the game. There arent that many instances or voxels in the game, I think there’s something like 20k voxels (a very very high estimate) and 10k instances. The amount the players are loading is not the amount in the game.

Ditto people messaging us about it, Wheatlies. It also happens to my brother on his PC sometimes. Even joining a game like Apocalypse Rising which has zero (0) voxels, it sometimes fails to finish loading for no explained reason.

And this started happening for all these people a few weeks ago, for many different games…

Graphics card related? This PC never has joining issues, but my bro’s does. My PC has an AMD card, my bro’s is NVIDIA. Or perhaps it’s internet related: My PC has an ethernet connection and rarely drops, while the problematic one is using gross wifi.

this is happening to alot of fnaf players, which uses a character-less menu before joining a game.

I think it just has something to do with an updated roblox client, but I think maybe its based on internet connection, IE timing out or roblox not being able to use enough bandwidth. Can anyone confirm this on a good connection that can also confirm it on a bad one?
I’m at about 1mbps down, so I’m on the lower end, and I’m having this issue.

As it turns out the issue is still happening, albiet today is the first time I have heard of anyone having trouble with it in a long while. I have changed nothing about the part count and nothing about the voxel count in the past 2 weeks, but it seems to be the case that when a server has been up for a good chunk of the day a bunch of people (myself included) can not get into the server until the server is shut down. Those who try experience a sort of freezing in the loading process and then usually a white screen.

I asked a few of my players that were somehow in the server that I couldn’t join and that no one else could join what type of computer they had, and the answer was not at all unanimously high end. A lot of them said they were on the lower end of the spectrum. I have to think though that they just got in a little earlier than me, and if they tried to rejoin maybe they wouldn’t be able to. I think this is an issue of the client ‘giving up’ on having a player join, due to some circumstances that I simply can’t wrap my head around. If anyone knows the circumstances under which this kind of thing happens, please let me know.

That’s really annoying, how the loading starts off extremely laggy, though once it’s done loading, it runs so smooth.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe its trying to send too much of the data at once. I get that maybe there’s a lot of terrain to send, but the loading shouldn’t be so intense as to crash the average user.

I would very much appreciate it if someone could help bring this issue to light as I really want my users to be able to play.

I’m actually pretty confident this issue has to do with connection speed, as far as I can tell, users with better connections are able to join fine. I suppose its a big place file and a lot of data to send. The error I get when trying to join (this ONLY occurs on servers that have been running for hours, new servers load almost instantly.) is “This game has shut down.”"

When it says “this game has shut down”, mind you, all of the voxels and parts in the game seem to have loaded, after the screen has been frozen for a while. This isn’t a local problem, this is something that is happening to at least 30% of my players.

Kinda like my post here?

In a nutshell, yeah, except that I get “this game has shutdown.” My theory is that there’s some kind of timeout for game joining and my users are just under it. It would be nice if this timeout were lengthened and maybe the loading was done based on avaliable bandwidth. IE if there’s 20mb of data to be sent, stream it at a rate acceptable for the client connection instead of all at once.
