Performance by carving out terrain

I had a question before I undertake a decently sized project, is it performance effective to carve out terrain that would not be used or even seen? I assume not due to shadows, but if it’s under the map, would it even matter?

May you please specify?

Yes, So say I setup a mountain and players are only going to climb it, would it improve performance is I shave out the entire inside of said mountain?

I had to delete all of the useless terrain on a fairly big map (10.000 x 8.000 studsbig) before to combat the lag.

I don’t know how large your map is but I guess you could do it when your studio and game are getting too lag-ier off your liking.
