Pet Alternative?

So I’ve been working on my game “Gem Finders” for about three - four months now and have finally implemented a “pet” hatching system using some tutorials and making mine unique. My question is that since so many people use “Pet’s” and “Eggs” for their systems my alternative to stand out was Spirits :ghost: They are the same as Pets just under a different name to not sound repetitive. Along with this instead of eggs I have "Spirit Canisters" to “un-box” the spirits, functions same way as the egg. My question is, is this a unique name and way of going about it to not sound repetitive, I’m trying to stand out and if I use “Spirits” and “Canisters” would it be better than “Pet’s” and “Eggs?” Thanks!

In my experience, changing the name/mechanics is not going to improve the success of the game. You need to innovate the idea, not the name.

Yes, I know that’s not how success works, wish it could be that easy  Just wanted to know if a different name from the other games would make it stand out not mechanics wise, but style wise. Hard for me to put it into words but yes, totally agree with you.

In terms of gaining attention - history says that reusing the Egg/Pet system works. Lots of games keep those names, because it’s what players are familiar with. If it’s the same mechanics, I don’t believe changing the names will make any difference at all.

if it’s too similar to pets, it should still be named & classified as “Pets”,
Calling them otherwise could possibly be a mistake, the “pet mechanism” is very well known anywhere else and that system be known as mutliple names will just end up confusing players,

you mostly set up a new name for uncommon features, so players will automatically not be aware of what it could possible be, therefore will give more attentions to the features about it.
