Photorealism Help

Hey Everyone! Been a while since I’ve posted on Devforum but I ha

ve a question for you all, when you build the model, or 3D Model it depending on t he software you use, once you port it in ROBLOX, I have a question how do you get the perfect lighting? What I’m trying to go for is realism, issue is it sometimes looks too glossy… you get the idea!

Here’s an example I did, I’m still working on it; but like… it still looks too blocky/too low poly.

You can use a quick and easy solution if you don’t want very realistic graphics.
You can use “Realistic graphics” plugin to make graphics more realistic
I have been using it for a long time, I will say this, not the most realistic graphics, but it looks very good and you can quickly make realistic graphics with one click

I would personally recommened that you experiment with the Environment Diffuse and Specular scales and also mess with the Ambient and OutdoorAmbient colors. All you can do is experiment.

Something I recommend messing with is the roughness on the textures on the models to make them less shiny. Higher roughness = less shiny.

Quick tip: if you change the material of the mesh part you can adjust the roughness+metalness (e.g. smooth plastic is shiny but some of the other ones aren’t). When you use a material with a textured part, it only affects the physical properties of the part and the normals, roughness, and metalness–not the color/texture.

Advanced tip: you can also use PBR textures to adjust the roughness and the metalness. Metalness affects the amount of reflection and roughness affects the spread of the reflection (e.g. makes the bright spots more spread out).

PBR textures are advanced by they’re also the key to photo realistic models (or at least as close as you can get in Roblox). Using Materials is a good quick fix though because you can quickly get some approximate NRM maps for your color maps/textures.

It’s all about the textures.

You have to get really good at textures if you want realism. Roblox doesn’t have advanced lighting like that.

You can edit photos you took of textures in Gimp and figure out how to make the pbr maps, it’s not difficult.
This is kinda outdated but it’s fun to do and it’s WORTH doing. I am the only person I know that does this but the results are really fire.

And for $200 on Steam you can get Substance painter for 3D models which I just recently got.

Yeah, it’s basically all about the textures. It’s easy once you figure it out.
