Pillar type VFX

Hello, I just started working on and learning about VFX today and I’m trying to figure out how one would make these pillar type VFX:

Are these types of effects typically made using mesh textures made with cylinders in something like blender? Or just normal textures sized up and rising quickly? Possibly both?

looks to me like a mix of particles and meshes, probably some parts with decals on them too

Oh I see, when you say “meshes” you mean the drawn parts of the whole effect that can also be sprite sheets right?
