In any game that allows for character customization and supports female hair, getting the gender of a player would really be a necessity.
I don’t want to see a player with girl hair and mustache

ROBLOX isn’t legally allowed to give out that information. There was a wonderful loop-de-loop discussion about this where people kept posting the same thing over and over again because they couldn’t be bothered to read the thread and turned it into a flame war, but before all hell broke lose there were some valuable answers.
So, before that happens here and this turns into a flame / whine war, you can:
Prompt the user for their gender when they first join the game
Add a setting for them to change their gender
(use the former if gender plays a huge role in the game, and the latter if it doesn’t)
Use gender-neutral hair, etc
Also, make sure you have the setting as “Character Gender” and not “Your Gender” because part of ROBLOX’s TRUSTe Kid’s Privacy certification is that they have to prevent minors from giving out personal information (that includes gender) – if you ask for the character’s gender though, you bypass that rule.

Default gender should be None, however prompt them when they first join the game and let them know they can change it later.

Just present them with the option right off the bat, I don’t get why it’s essential information at all. I’ve recently started calling myself Kerrigan and living as a female, but when I was a guy I had long hair and a beard. The amount of times stupid customization systems like yours didn’t let me have that long hair and a beard was absurd. That, and what if a guy wants to play as a female or vice versa? There’s really no need at all whatsoever to try and limit this kind of feature.

That’s why you chose your character’s gender and not your own.
That’s opinion. It’s a choice that’s up to the game dev – if you don’t like it, don’t play the game.
