Players Leaving During Tutorial - Feedback Needed

Game: PewPew Powa!

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some feedback and insight on an issue I’ve encountered with the tutorial in my game. Despite the tutorial being fully functional and thoroughly tested, I’m noticing that a significant number of players are leaving the game during the tutorial. The tutorial covers all the essential mechanics and is designed to be interactive, yet players don’t seem to make it through to the end.

Here’s a bit more detail about the situation:

  • The tutorial is designed to be short and simple, walking players through the core mechanics.
  • It has visual indicators, prompts, and is structured to be easy to follow.
  • No major bugs or errors have been reported, and I’ve tested it multiple times without issue.
  • I’ve also used funnel analytics to see where players are dropping off, and the majority seem to leave early on, even before completing the key steps.

I’d love to hear your thoughts or any similar experiences you’ve had:

  • Are there any common reasons players leave tutorials even when they’re functioning as intended?
  • Could there be any hidden UX/UI factors that I might be overlooking?
  • What strategies have you used to retain players during the tutorial phase?

Am I simply just not having enough players play the game that are interested?
Any feedback, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here are some reasons people may be leaving your game because of your tutorial (i havent played your game, but here are some common issues)

  1. Getting the tutorial thrown in the players face. When players join they don’t want to be immediately greeted by a tutorial.

  2. Not being able to skip it. A lot of people may understand and may not like having to complete a tutorial.

  3. Self-explanitory game using tutorial. If your game doesn’t need a tutorial, there shouldnt be one.

  4. Having a non-beginner friendly tutorial. If the tutorial is hard to complete then players will feel like they’ll never get to the real gameplay

I’ve found implementing onboarding funnel events very helpful for why players leave: Funnel Events | Documentation - Roblox Creator Hub

Well, now I know where players leave, but the true way to know WHY is to do play testing.

I can be more specific to your game when I have more time, sry

Appreciate the feedback, will make the tutorial non-mandatory.

The tutorial should simply be optional and appear at the side of the user’s screen rather than it being in the middle, which could potentially disrupt gameplay, which is particularly important for new first user impressions. I also can’t actually play the game before declining the tutorial.

I always leave games if they force a tutorial on me. I doubt a Roblox game is gonna need a tutorial because most Roblox games are already alike.

Not mine… lol. Apparently people only like anime fighting games

I personally dislike tutorials if you can’t skip them, or aren’t easy to skip. It’s best to just not have any tutorials in a Roblox game if you want people to stay longer and not leave.
