(Poll) What do you like/think is the best way to move a plane?

Hey fellas.

If you vote on this poll, please comment explaining your decision.

Trying to make a game with a bunch of planes, and i was wondering what the community likes.

I want kids to be able to use these planes effectively, so i thought click steering, which is what i grew up with, is the way to go. But there are very few working models out there that offer it, and it has plenty of problems.

I thought mouse steering could be good too, but it hosts its own problems, too.

Then i thought about using W/S for pitch, A/D roll, Q/E yaw, etc. I didn’t think this is very popular, But i’d like to hear what the community prefers and think is the best solution.

So, what’ll it be?

  • Point-&-Click Steering
  • Mouse Steering
  • W/S A/D Q/E Steering

How about for mobile?

  • W/A/S/D Buttons on Screen
  • Tap to Steer
  • Drag to Steer

In my opinion mouse steering is superior. Why? Well, in most game it’s the default option, I know this is roblox and not X-Plane but it’s the easiest for players to grasp in my opinion.

Point and click steering is my go to option, it can be used on mobile as well as PCs.
The player can coast the plane by not clicking to steer and you can have guis that the user can interact with.

I must agree with one thing you said, compatibility. If you can’t make the steering option player choice and want to attract players from all platforms, or at least mobile and PC, that’s the go to. However it would be perfectly understandable for your game to not even be compatible on mobile if it’s extremely memory dependent.

I would stay away from keyboard maneuvering because you cant get precise movements like you would with mouse.

that’s exactly why i like it, you can’t move your mouse to click the gui if you’ve got mouse steering and are near something you can crash into. @lxuca

Please choose the right category and don’t mass-ping people. Fixed for you.

You could make the right click button unfocus yourself from the yoke and allow you to interact with Ui without interfering with the plane and then left click to focus again.

That’s actually a pretty good idea.

Thanks and sorry about that, also Egg Hunt 2018 was alot of fun, was a good game. I managed to glitch outside the lobby and i saw the sign you had made outside by the river lol

My preferred form of control is having the plane fly towards your mouse.
But I think there should be some keyboard controls as well for some advanced maneuvering.

@lxuca

you two suggested mouse steering, would you like the camera to be locked in line with the player’s character, locked in first person, or completly unlocked? or even a camera view cycle key? any other viewpoint you would like?

I say both first person and in line with the character with a toggle so that people have options, along with an option to unlock the mouse with a special button to interact with the UI like @lxuca said.

For the first poll, I meant to mouse steer. It’s really easy to accumulate the pilot system with “Mouse Steering.” If you take a look at Pilot Training Flight Simulator, made by @Orange12345 it’s really simple to pilot the plane. It’s also easy to butter with, (landing smoothly) for ro-aviation players.

Maybe you could have it locked into a view for the default view but allow players to cycle through some other views, such as an unlocked external one and bind them to number keys!
