Project Rawzom | Personal Devlog #1

So for the past week I’ve been working on and off on this game called Project Rawzom. The concept isn’t too unique and I think its been done on roblox before. But my main goal with this game is to make a top down zombie survival game. I want to kind of make like a rogue like top down zombie game, but not with class selection.

So the first thing I started working on was a menu screen. I am by no means good at GUI design, and I have never even attempted to make a somewhat good looking GUI. But I do like the look of the Project Rawzom text.

Besides that I discovered the UIGradient tool and kind of went overkill with it in my opinion.

The multiplayer option is supposed to be grayed out. And I might remove the Terms Of Service and Community Guidelines later on.

Sidglz is my development account.

So for the actual game itself, I have decided to start working on singleplayer first obviously. Multiplayer will be a bit different from singleplayer but once singleplayer is done I can probably just copy and paste and change a few things.

So the first thing I added was an item picking up system, along with food and water. Food and water both decrease over time, if they reach zero you start taking damage. If you eat too much food and or water, you get a debuff which slows you down.

i wanted to add beans but i added tomatoes instead

The second thing I started working on, was Stats and Resources. You can open the respective menus by pressing E… for resources… or you can press R… for stats.

The resources menu is not done yet, I am going to add a lot more things to it!

Stats —

I’ll talk more about the traits you see on the left in a minute…
And also neither of these menus are complete, so you will see a different version of them soon.
Resources —

The resource page will be more like… an inventory, but all usable items are tools so it will show you materials and health and other things that are to come.

So you might have noticed a big text that says traits! And that is the randomly given traits of your player. There are a few traits, I can’t name them all off the top of my head but there are only two good ones, which are leader and strong. They give you buffs or debuffs depending on what they specialize in. So there is a little RNG involved, but you can’t get more then two traits at a time, so you can’t get like 7 bad traits.

The final thing I will be talking about… the baseball bat. It is the first weapon I have added to the game. It’s pretty self explanatory. The damage of the baseball bat is based off the damage value of the bat, and the Strength stat which goes up everytime you attack an enemy.

Here is a list of features I am planning on adding…

  • Crafting,
  • Zombie Ai,
  • More base stats,

And there is more to be added, leave a suggestion, I will make sure I respond!

Thank you so much for reading all of this, if you are interested in the rest of this project, I hope to send out another devlog in the following week. Follow my profile for updates.

This is probably the longest I have ever worked on a project without losing motivation, I think creating thumbnails and badges has kept my interest in this project going. I’m not sure why but it worked for me, it might work for you.

Maybe try to make the background of menu transparent and make a custom camera point. For my part, I always liked games with a view of the game in the background, in the menu.
It is not mostly a view point on the game in progress, but a menu scene (no players, just some animated elements and particles).

That is a reallly good idea, thank you so much!

I was thinking, maybe a person wearing some old looking clothes sitting by a fire in the snow. Something close to that.
This has just given me so many ideas…

If you want to make multiple viewpoints, make it so it changes when you select a button.
For example, the settings button makes the settings tab appear, and makes the camera move to another spot of the scene.

Got a discord for it? I wanna stay up-to-date with the progress

No i dont use discord sorry, you can follow my profile though

nice concept, but ui could be better

I’m not a gui designer so I don’t really know what makes good gui. I am reworking the menu and that will be included in the next devlog

reminds me of a ps3 game dead nation

never played, ill check it out and see if there is some stuff that inspires me

Its an interesting game, looks really cool. It has a lot more action then I am planning for my game, only thing similar is really zombies and the camera style, but my camera is more zoomed in then dead nation.

Is Project Zomboid a inspiration?

Yes it is the inspiration, but I have stopped working on this game.
