Proper fishing mechanics in video games

I’m looking to add a small fishing feature into my game and while I was thinking of a way to implement it I started thinking instead about how other games have done it in the past. It can be as simple as dropping your lure into the water, waiting for some random amount of time, then clicking if the bobber sinks. Or it can be as complex as the fishing in Stardew Valley where you have to actually “catch” the fish.

What do you guys think? Which games have done fishing very well?

You could look at Meepcity for inspiration. It some ponds you can actually fish, if you didn’t know. It’s really simple to fish too. You just aim, and then you wait for a fish to come near your fishing pole. Then, you click again. If you want to see the fishing system for yourself, just check out Meepcity.
