[PSGA] Competition Guide and Information for Gym Staff

PSGA Competition Guide

This post contains information about how competitions at PSGA are conducted. True for all competition types (Optionals/Showcases/Ally Competitions). As stated in the title, this is just a guide meant to help things run smoothly.

For Allied Groups…

Competition Prerequisites

  • Alliance with PSGA
  • Must compete with PSGA’s requirements
  • Must abide by PSGA’s deductions

Team Requirements

  • Must have a team leotard (any practice outfit is fine as long as the team is uniformed)
  • Must have at least 4 judges and 4 coaches attending the competition (one for each judging panel and event)

Competition Preparations

  • Must provide the floor music list for your own team’s competing gymnasts.
  • Must have a list of all competing gymnasts and staff attending

Pre-competition

Before any competition, we will have a practice competition before the big day, just to be sure that everything runs as shown below. Routines will not be performed.

Beginning & Warmup

  • Lead team to the floor and sit/wait until the competition begins

  • Optionally, coaches can instruct gymnasts to run laps around the floor

  • Warmup can begin when instructed by the competition host

  • Lead team in 5-10 minute warmup on a small section of the floor (this warmup may include: stretching, exercises, kicks, jumps)

Team Introduction

  • Line up your team shoulder-to-shoulder in an organized space wherever you were on the floor.

Disperse

  • Lead your team to their first event, don’t forget you will be rotating in Olympic order (Vault > Bars > Beam > Floor)

General Guide for Events

  • Warmups should consist of the gymnast practicing skills that they will perform in their routines, they will not have time to perform their full routine during warmups.

  • The gymnasts don’t have to warm up every skill in their routines, only what they feel like they need to practice.

  • 5-minute warmups, gymnasts should go back to back, taking turns every 15-30 seconds

  • The gymnasts will compete in the same order at each event (you may go in opposite order if so desired, first to last, and vice versa.

  • The judges will announce a gymnast’s score shortly after they have competed on that event.

  • Have the team sit/stand aside in an orderly fashion once they’ve competed.

  • Be aware of the 5-minute warmup time and when time is up for someone they must get off of the apparatus.

Beam/Floor Warm-up

  • Floor: split the gymnast into corners and have them take turns performing their tumbling passes. Any dance elements (leaps, jumps, turns, dance segments) should be practiced on the interior sides of the floor, not the center where others will be tumbling.

  • Beam: each gymnast should get between 15-30 seconds to practice the elements in their routine. Connections, leaps, jumps, dismounts, mounts. If there’s time, each gymnast may be able to get at least 2 turns in the warmup.

Vault/Bars Warm-up

  • Vault: coaches may want to start off with sprints down the vault, gymnasts should go back to back. Once one gymnast reaches the end of the vault, the next one can begin. It’s highly likely that during the warmup, each gymnast will get to perform the vault that which they will compete.

  • Bars: gymnasts may break down their routine during the warmup so that they practice the first half of the routine on their first turn, then the second half on their second turn. Or they may choose to just practice a difficult connection on each turn.

Rotating Events

  • If your team has finished competing, stay on that event until the announcer announces that it is time to advance to the next event.
  • Lead your team to the next event in an orderly manner.

After Competing

There may be a period of intermission after everyone has competed so that the judges can calculate all the scores. There are a lot of scores to check so please be patient during this time.

  • The teams will stay at the apparatus they finished competing on until further notice

  • Upon further notice, lead your team to the floor/room where awards will be held and have them sit in an organized space. Not too close to the other team(s).

Awards Session

The competition arena has an awards room, but it will probably only be used for Optional Level Competitions (PSGA vs PSGA).

For competitions against allied groups, we will likely just end the competition after everyone is done competing, then announce the winning group on another platform (Discord, Twitter). Or, we may go to the awards room to announce the winning group, but not do individual and event awards.
