Puzzle Ideas for Single-Player Horror Game?

I’m making a single-player horror game. The game revolves around the player trying to escape a monster while uncovering the backstory of the monster and the setting.

I have a good story lined up. However, I don’t want the game to be just an interactive storybook. I want the player to feel like they have some control over what happens. I think adding some puzzles might be a solution. For example, I could have the player look around the map for numbers that form the code for a keypad.

I’m not sure what other puzzles to include. I want puzzles that are difficult enough to interest the player, but not so difficult that the player is frustrated, or worse, becomes less scared of the game.

Got any ideas? Thanks!

How about some boss battles that require flicking switches to harm the boss?

Yeah, I know. I’m so out of ideas.

You cannot go wrong with a good riddle

if 1 + 1 is 2, then what would 377 be?
