Before I begin, I want to clarify that I have no intention of glorifying suicide. My goal is to enhance the emotional impact of the story while staying within Roblox’s guidelines.
I am a Roblox horror game developer, and I recently released a new story-driven horror experience. Every action in the game has meaning and contributes to the overall narrative.
One of my endings involves the main character jumping into the void. Instead of falling, they begin to hang, accompanied by a rope SFX, implying that they used a rope. The context behind this is that the MC regains lost memories and realizes they intentionally caused their wife’s death.
I want to ensure my game remains within Roblox’s TOS while still delivering a strong narrative. I’ve seen games like Jim’s Computer portray suicide-related themes effectively, with over 3 million visits and no bans.
How far can developers go with sensitive themes like this? Would adding a content warning and ensuring non-glorification be enough, or does this type of scene inherently break policy? I’d appreciate any guidance from experienced developers or moderators.
We do not allow content or behavior that depicts, glorifies, or encourages suicide, self-injury, or real-world activities that may create an extreme risk of physical harm including:
Content that glorifies, supports, or depicts instances or methods of suicide or self-harm
The key word here is depicts. Even if you don’t glorify or support it - simply depicting it is still against the rules.
One of my endings involves the main character jumping into the void. Instead of falling, they begin to hang, accompanied by a rope SFX, implying that they used a rope.
This definitely sounds borderline, but I think you could get away with it. I’d skip the part where they begin to hang, but jumping and falling into the void, camera fading out, and rope SFX you could probably get away with.
Skip the content warning/disclaimer, that’s more likely to get flagged and moderated than your actual scene.
I completely understand, and I will probably remove the scene entirely, however what I dont get is how “Jims Computer” can get away with it. I don’t know if its a moderation thing, but it has 30 million visits.
