Hey! I just have a question, Im primarily a scripter currently trying to branch out into other categories, modeling/building/animating etc, I’m working on a solo project, and I’m starting to build the map, I did all the framework and what not like the walls, flooring, texturing all that stuff myself, and I’m ready to actually start with the objects, etc (just for context, I’m building an arcade.) I guess my question is do you guys build every single thing from scrap? Chairs, Tables, Trashcans, Toilets, Light fixtures, etc etc, Do you build it all from scratch through modeling/building or do you guys use any meshes/free models etc. Just curious as to how I should get started! thanks.
Any solo developer who builds everything from scratch is not efficient. Things that require uniqueness or things which you cannot find “good” free models for, you should build. But the idea that everything needs to be built from scratch is silly imo, because you aren’t building the entire concept from scratch (the roblox engine, the interface, etc.).
Using other peoples expertise is essential… thats why we are all here in the forum too, to leverage other’s strengths to help strengthen our own.
Thats my two cents.
Thank you! I appreciate it, so in otherwords, If I use meshes/models from other people it’s fine aslong as its not clustered, looks dumb/unprofessional, and isn’t something unique specifically for my game that helps! thanks.
Personally when I start on solo projects I don’t work on whole maps, I just do assets(Ex. Bus, house, sportfield, etc) I make everything from scratch. Even though it costs a lot of work, I provide quality over quantity.
But when I work with a team and am to work with a whole team, I work with the assets made from the team. So I do not know if that is handmade, but sometimes when I do not like it, I talk with the developer of that asset and discuss about how we could change this so we would improve our project.
Hope this helps!
i make it from scratch, sometimes i use third party sofware like blender to grab some meshes that are not in studio like the donut form
I’ve just been using your advice for a few minutes, and wow! This really helps me out! Thank you!
Some of roblox’s official free assets are great, or trusted DEVs. Probably don’t use any assets with scripts tho
Adding onto this, any model with scripts you can simply right click > disable scripts.
Also, one of my favorite model makers is EndorsedModel, they make pretty high quality models for simple games.
Thanks for the tip
And don’t hesitate sometimes to purchase sets it’s usually quite cheap, after all some creators needs money
It just depends on the situation honestly, if ur working on a big map/building that needs to contain lots of meshes you could use asset packs. You should check out synty studio on google they sell tons of cool low poly assets for cheap.
And when you are using an asset pack you could still make some assets urself (make sure they’re both made in a similair style tho.)
Personally I prefer to make as many things as I can by myself, I can build and model, but scripting is not my strong point, so I use free scripts, it’s nothing to be ashamed of for sure! Occasionally I use free models, not too many. You could always use a free model as a place holder and go back and re-make it.
Personally I build everything from scratch in studio, but I do have to say that Blender is a very useful tool for complex shapes and for time saving and you should get ready to learn how to use Blender if you want to make unique and highly detailed stuff because those stuff are really difficult to make with just the tools Roblox gives you to work with in the studio. Free models I never use but it’s perfectly fine to use them if you want to save time or cant seem to figure out how to make something but if you use it make sure to check the model in the workspace to see if it has something suspicious such as a script as you never know if the free model has a virus implemented in it.
You must use something. From my experience, building from scratch means you always miss some major detail, in this case, say maybe a coin slot in a game cabinet, might seem silly to miss but it does happen.
Use a reference image, or a mesh, dont trace meshes or copy exact free models if you want to get better at building though. Just get a general idea in your head. Also would recommend learning blender, you can make more complex shapes and textures, therefore more accurate creations. Don’t make it solely out of meshes though, lag will ensue.
Good luck with your game
