Realistic Stances & Animations (in Blender)

Recently I’ve been attempting to create a fluent and reactive combat system that uses real medieval fighting stances, with some added dramatization.

This is the first time I’ve animated anything to do with weaponry, and I’m not sure how to make things look natural and smooth.

For example, looking at common one handed stances I noticed that most stances have the non dominant leg positioned outwards, and the dominant leg sideways and slightly angled. This is my best attempt at recreating this stance, but it looks odd and not as pronounced.

What can I do to improve the stance and make the positioning better?
