I’m approaching the release date of my obby, mainly just finishing up some extra features, however I am sort of stuck at a dilemma: is making a rebirth system in the obby worth it, or should I just skip doing that?
Rebirthing usually works like this in obbies:
1- Reach the end of the obby, or make significant progress in the obby
2- Rebirth for a secondary currency, a special item, or to make progress towards a special item (eg. beat the obby 5 times for a cool item or boost)
Sometimes there are monthly leaderboards and all-time leaderboards so I really just want to know whether implementing a rebirth system for an obby is worth it.
I suppose there are pros and cons to this:
Pros
Cons
- Sometimes makes the game stand out depending on how it is approached
- Generally seen as cliché
- Probably influences playtime
- Sort of pointless if the player is good enough to complete the obby
- Gives players the option to make some form of progress if the game gets too hard, mainly for targeting children as the player base
I don’t really see the point with “rebirthing in obbies” as sure it can increase playtime, but it’d just be boring playing the same obby you just played over and over again.
Maybe I’m just biased because I regularly play way more technical and advanced obbies but still, it just doesn’t really make any sense to me.
Subvert expectations! Throw in a rebirth system that goes based on deaths/failures. Lose 10 times in a row? Spend that on a jump boost, good until you finally beat the level.
I see rebirths as a good way to engage the little kid players, but when I play games I feel like deleting all my progress for a little purple coin is like trading $100 for $1 because you like the picture on the $1 bill better than the one on the $100 bill, it’s not worth it to buy but it might be worth it to make.
It all depends if you really feel like doing the extra work.
