As a Roblox player I always struggle to find things on the Roblox avatar shop that looks like me or like I would wear. Then I remembered that Nintendo takes a picture of your face and then makes your avatar nearly exactly like you, so I was thinking, why doesn’t Roblox do this.
So first off you would take a picture of your face and then type in how many robux you have then Roblox would find things that you could buy that resemble you!
If this issue was addressed people would buy more accessories and they would be satisfied with their purchase, as currently some people are not always satisfied with their purchase because it does not look like or resembles them!
Personally, since Roblox has a big player base of all ages, this is a huge security risk and will most likely never happen. I can’t imagine how many parents would be against their children using this feature or even Roblox because they would have pictures of their children. I would also think this would be a very big thing to do technically as well.
In the end, I believe this shouldn’t be added nor do I think it will ever be added just because of the security risk and the technical resources it would take.
There’s obviously a privacy concern here, but I think as long as it’s made clear that the image taken is stored locally and never touches Roblox servers, that would be mitigated. Of course, that doesn’t mean that parents who are concerned with their child’s safety won’t boycott it, even if the image processing is done entirely on the user’s computer. Trying something like this could be an interesting experiment with image processing and facial recognition, though.
Even then, people still won’t like their avatars looking like their real life face. Also, there isn’t much customization that a tool like this could have. For example, it could change the face of your avatar based on your facial expression, or hair and skin color based on real life. All of these are in the realm of what can be done with facial recognition, so I don’t think it’s technically impossible to do. However, with the way the avatar system is currently designed, it’s much simpler to just change your avatar accordingly.
As far as picking out clothes/accessories goes, would you have to take a full body shot and it would try to recognize what you are wearing? I don’t think most people would find that particularly useful. Being able to automatically find a good hair could be useful, but there’s tons of different items that would need to be cataloged for that.
Not only is privacy a concern but this would have to be a mobile feature. I don’t think anyone takes selfies through their computer’s webcam. Webcam quality is generally horrible.
Would be better in #platform-feedback:mobile-features but this request is unfortunately infeasible due to privacy reasons alone.
There shouldn’t be any privacy concern if the picture is never uploaded anywhere. They don’t even have to keep the picture on the device after it’s been processed.
I think as developers we should discuss about the features themselves – Roblox product managers and engineers can figure out whether it is technically/legally feasible.
