Requirement suggestion for experienced "New Member" rank

Hey there,

I have a suggestion for other credentials that will allow experienced players to earn “New Member” rank sooner.

My Problem
This might be a special case situation but please hear me out. 17 days ago I started frantically using the developer forum. The “New Member” rank requires browsing and reading according to the How to. So I browsed and read… Like an unhealthy amount. I needed to urgently gain this rank because I was invited to RDC 2019 and wanted to ask questions prior to purchasing my ticket. However I could not ask anything for those 17 days, I could only read and hope. Tickets were selling out fast and I panicked quite a bit.

Another unfortunate situation I encountered was I needed to resolve a issue with one of my games that I could not figure out anywhere on the internet. One of my games has been getting a lot of traffic and it just had me thinking what if the issue was so significant that there was a major loss of traffic and I had no developer forum to reach out too.

Suggested Solution
So I have been a active user since 2009, that’s 10 years! And I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve logged in Roblox Studio.

  • “New Member” rank should immediately be given to people who have logged several hours in studio.
  • “New Member” rank should immediately be given to people who were invited to RDC.
  • “New Member” rank should immediately be given to people with a large amount of place visits on their profile.
  • This is special case, you should have started using the forum sooner.

You should’ve had emailed the devrelations in that case or mentioned/DMed them on Twitter.

Edit: There’s also the RDC server on Discord. You can find the invites in the 2019 RDC group.

I agree, although sometimes that may take too long. The DevForum community is quite active and you will be pretty much guaranteed a response at least within a few hours, while communicating directly with Roblox staff could take longer.

Wow, I did not consider those options. I should have reached out to staff in one of the various ways.

Now following Roblox Developer Relations on twitter. Thanks!

Using Roblox as a platform and using the forum are very different. Someone can spend as much time in studio without caring about being part of the forum, or potentially go without seeing any other posts and knowing what posting is like. Using place visits alone would also alienate a lot of users who have not released a game, and giving it to people with place visits would potentially give membership to the wrong people.

Giving New Member to RDC invitees makes no sense. If they aren’t using the forum anyway, there’s no point in them having access. As others mentioned, there was an RDC discord and email address available for asking questions to community/staff.

People will get access to the forum when they engage with the forum (reading content), which happens organically if they actually want to use the forum. The time before being allowed to post is important because that allows them to get used to the forum structure and the required tone of posting.

The other metrics (hours logged in Studio, number of place visits) are not useful for awarding New Member for the same reasons. They don’t test whether you actually need to have posting access on the forum.

I agree I see now. I do not think the requirements should be changed in anyway. The forum can be quite complex in all its categories, features and guidelines. This tool requires a bit of training to use. But because of that it offers a very clean system for people to improve their work, knowledge and relations.

Giving inexperienced users the key to a car they don’t know how to drive is a little messy.
