Restore transparency on classic accessories using SurfaceAppearance

Pirate Captain's Hat - Roblox
Hunting Hat - Roblox
Native American Headdress - Roblox

Way back in 2007, Roblox used transparent textures to add feathers to their brand new Hats! Realistic fluff without burning the entire rendering budget of a pre-built Windows XP PC! Alas time sailed on, and by 2013 transparent textures were no longer supported by SpecialMeshes. Any transparent pixels were treated as fully opaque. The Golden Age of Pirate Captain’s Hat was over.

However, just last month Roblox released the Azure Peacock Tail Feathers! This accessory uses a SurfaceAppearance to stack layers and layers of transparent feathers, and it looks fantastic!

So why not use SurfaceAppearances to restore these old hats? There’s a little volume lost with the way transparency is handled, but I’m sure with some tweaks these hats will look as fresh as the day they released!

Here’s the .rbxm for anyone who wants to take a closer look at the example changes above. Enjoy!

I’m hoping that the staff will see this and respond to it. These items look 10x cooler when fixed, and the pirate hat desperately needs to be changed with the feather and not look like a piece of paper of a drawn feather. Same applies to the others.

I would love to see something happening about this, especially now since some of the hats were fixed!

This wouldn’t ruin the accessory & the artist’s intended way for the hat, which wouldn’t ruin outfits, and would be a very nice change to see.

It’s very easy to do and would look amazing, we’re going to soon have PBR for UGC, so why not have this fixed as well!

People who get upset about the feather not being square anymore… I mean UGC can create replacement feathers for that, so I don’t think this would fully ruin anybody’s outfit.
