Recently, I made a game named Cobra Kai Karate on ROBLOX. This game, obviously had content from the Cobra Kai series (dojos, icons, etc). Soon, an official Cobra Kai Karate game which is partnered with Sony will be taking down bigger games. We already have plans to change up the game, but we hope to find out if 1. we will get a notice before ROBLOX takes down our game, assuming Sony does copyright us, and 2. how much we should change the game, obviously icons, titles, and stuff like that must be changed, but what about things like buildings which are modelled after the show?
Our revenue and DAU has been up by like 80%. To be safe we’re currently working on rebranding the entire game but that’s also why I need to know the second part, to see how far we needed to change it.
Stuff like buildings that you made shouldn’t be a problem, even if it’s very similar to items from the show. If you used a Mesh created by the copyright holder then you’d be in trouble.
@PwnedDuel you make money from Robloxians who are Premium members playing your game (Premium Payouts).
Any money made using someone else’s copyrighted material in your game is a DMCA violation. Roblox won’t give you a warning before shutting it down.
Yeah no we aren’t using any meshes from the original owners. Everything is custom made. Also, all of the money we’ve made from the game; is that still going to be fine or should I worry about that?
If you change it before it gets reported for a DMCA violation I don’t think it’d be an issue.
For perspective, I had a vehicle suspension game with my model of a Formula 1 car that was 100% my creation, but I used the name “Formula One” in the title.
It got shut down just because of the name. There was no warning.
Strangely enough there are hundreds of games with that title in the name as well as 1000’s of models in the toolbox. It may have been that the number of visits to my game triggered something, or someone reported it.
Right yeah that’s the biggest problem, when your game gets big, more people notice it, including these bigger companies. Even ROBLOX moderators may notice it and take it down before they get in trouble with Formula One (in your case). But yes it’s most likely the number of visits and popularity.
If you decide to change the names then change the logos as well. You can make the images recognizably similar, but make them different enough so they aren’t the copyrighted image. I’d also change the motto slightly in case it’s copyrighted as well.
Pretty sure he means like, if you have a game that has copyrighted material, the money made from it is owned by the copyright holders. Now this only matters if you’ve actually been copyrighted, which in my case it’s coming very soon.
