Roblox Players Perform Full Length Nutcracker (Video)

Hi everyone, Happy Holidays!

I just wanted to share my Nutcracker Production; it’s a full length ballet created in Roblox with real players performing each role. It took about a month of choreographing and filming and about 20 hours of video editing. I’m really proud of the dozens of players who showed up for numerous rehearsals. I think it goes to show how pretty much anything can be done on this platform. Here is a short preview (the full ballet runtime is an hour, I’ll link it below too).

When I first started watching the video. I hadn’t read the text above it. I thought it was scripted and was impressed. And then I went and read it and saw that it was players and was even more impressed.

So here’s how my reactions went:
“oh this is cool, wish it was the whole performance not just a short video”
“oh dang it is a full video, awesome”
“holy crap this is an hour long, that’s some dedication and hard work right there”
“OH MY GOD THIS WASN’T SCRIPTED/ANIMATED IT’S ACTUAL PLAYERS”

The only complaint I have is I think it’s unfair to put in the video that you choreographed it along with Petipa as he was the one that choreographed the ballet. If you added in a few unique dances, alright fine but I still think it could’ve be listed separately. If you mean to say you “choreographed” it by leading the players and making the animations, that’s very unethical to put your name with Petipa let alone say you choreographed it.

But I mean that’s just a very small complaint and doesn’t take away from how incredible this is. Awesome job.

This is the first time I’ve seen a coordinated live performance on Roblox. I never would have thought of such a thing, but it’s a really cool idea which certainly goes to show in practice. Great work!

Glad you liked it.
I choreographed everything except the doll variations at the beginning and the sugar plum grand pas at the end. Both of those were based on Petipa’s choreography. Nutcracker is one of those ballets that, aside from a few recognizable dances, each ballet company creates their own unique routines for most of the dances. I would have liked to use Petipa’s work for the entire ballet but I only had reference videos for a few dances that actually used his choreography.

What I did forget to do was credit Adolphe Adam for one song from Giselle I had to sub in at the end due to lack of music resources. I’ll make a note in the description about that.

Very impressive! Never seen such a large scale live-performance, let alone one so organized.

It wasn’t practical to record the whole ballet live in one take as we had players from around the world in different time zones, so I actually recorded scene by scene, each weekend for a month. But yes, the individual scenes were done live.
