Rules of scripting Support

Why is posting scripts against the Scripting Support Rules? Because I have seen other users post scripts before

You asked this in my DMs, so I’ll just repeat it for posterity.

It doesn’t help anyone else who might be reading the thread and you don’t learn anything from it, users are allowed to ask for snippets and stuff (e.g. How do I figure out if a child is in something with a tag?) but asking for entire scripts isn’t allowed. You’re not asking for help at that point, you’re just asking for stuff.

Ok but I have seen some users post scripts as well, but they aren’t asking for scripts, they’re just showing them. Is that against the rules or not?

It’s scripting support for a reason. If a user is posting code without asking for assistance then the post should be flagged and deleted (or, if appropriate, may be moved to #development-support:code-review). Asking for full scripts is also called spoon feeding. Spoon feeding bad for the same exact reason @Kampfkarren said: you’re not asking for help at that point, you’re just asking for stuff. Spoon feeding causes the user to come back asking for more code in the end and they don’t learn anything from it.

Oh Ok I totally get it, and I’m sorry for asking for scripts. Sometimes I just don’t know what type in my scripts and I promise I will never ask for scripts again!

The goal of the subforum is to help people with their scripting and to learn. You can ask how to go about things and most people will provide you with different links and some information but only due this if you’ve tried doing it and researching everything yourself.

You want to provide people with as much information you can on what you’ve already tried, and what you are trying to achieve.

Now posting scripts is different, usually its about something not working and helps to provide people with what you’re working with. So if you have a really big bug that’s breaking the game and you’ve spent hours trying to fix it, you’ll want to make a post about it. In the post you include things like what you are going for and how it should work, then the information on the bug and what you’ve tried.

Simply don’t ask if you haven’t tried.
