There are apparently measure against this right now like blacklisting the names of some top users and Roblox staff, but thing is, all identities are equally valuable, while I may not be as big as some top developers or not be Roblox staff my identity is still my identity, and still has value, and I would not like to be impersonated. I would say “don’t allow taken usernames as display names” to solve this issue, but display names follow the same rules as usernames, this could probably be alleviated by allowing spaces and emojis and all that so they can be a bit more diverse. The limitation is why I believe it to be a little pointless
Agreed. I too don’t want people stealing my name and pretending to be me. I do commissions, therefore if a scammer pretends to be me, I’ll look bad, even though I wasn’t the one doing this. This CAN be a great update, I just don’t know how well it will turn out.
I’m not a fan of having these display names show up in the chat without any indication of what the actual user is. A lot of games do not display the player list due to any number of reasons, so people typing with the same username can get awfully confusing. My other problem regarding this is moderation. Various game servers I have joined uses visual evidence for reports of exploiting or other rule breaking content for their game, and this may make it more annoying to properly ban rulebreakers, especially those who attempt to impersonate.
But in any case I’m excited for this update.
Has this been rolled out to everybody?
You can make it look nice :P
No lol, this is only gonna be released in like way later in the year, as they are improving their impersonation filtering and stuff.
And yes they do already have one in place.
I won’t be changing my name to a display name in a hurry, this increases impersonation which is not a good thing. You should be adding checkmarks to verified users, such as adding one to star creators like Flamingo and other highly impersonated people who are maybe not in the Star Program such as @KonekoKittenWasTaken and @SonaDrawzStuffYT. I also think a checkmark (if it ever does get added) should be added to top developers as they are likely going to be the most impersonated people.
Overall, this is a bad change and Roblox is kinda turning like Twitter with the naming scheme. Also I don’t see the point of keeping the charge for username changes to 1000 Robux, perhaps change it to 250 Robux?
Soo now, your username is kinda like a login right? I think 1000 robux to change it, is too much when those display names are around, I think it would be good if you gave one free username change and charge a lot less than before for it when user wants to change it again.
This.
My concern is about protecting everyone’s identity. I may be a small developer, but I’ve found there’s already some accounts that I don’t know trying to impersonate me, probably to scam people. (@Fxllencodealt, no idea who this is…)
This update will just make it easier.
It always has been lol
The reason DisplayNames are great are for people got their username stolen by an alt account of themselves or from someone else, I wouldn’t have anything to change my username into, I do think they should have at least 1 free username change. But that kind of isn’t related to what they are trying to fix here, this would be great for the community overall, imagine the thousands of people which will stop buying roblox accounts because of usernames? That is SO GREAT. It lets roblox focus on other things and improve their moderation.
Exactly, Roblox should of consulted people before adding it as now it is going to be even harder to stop impersonation. A kid isn’t going to know that someone isn’t the real one. People are going to use it more to commit acts that are against ToS and law to make it look like someone else has done it.
I think they will allow stuff like contacting roblox support to lock a certain display name? That should be added soon? I think that’s a great idea to continue the entire thing, as for impersonating more famous people, they are trying to already not allow star creators names, roblox staff, etc. As for non-star creators, they will probably add those too. And if they don’t, the entire thing about requesting a locked display name would be great.
Exactly. It’s really hard for me to see the plusses of this update. I’m extremely concerned about users impersonating me with this and scamming people in my name. There should be a program in which you pay 10,000 robux for a license to make sure nobody can use your name or your IP as their Display Name.
This is really cool, but impersonating could lead to some chaos…
Oh wow are u that famous lol, like, i believe most games will show people’s usernames when it comes to trading, or anything serious really, and if that’s a concern, I think you should try to contact roblox support about it and try to lock that DisplayName from people. Plus, the people who actually know you will probably not be dumb, and will probably not believe in these people, you know?
You shouldn’t have to worry TOO much about it, I’m sure roblox would have a program to lock certain display names and stuff. AT LEAST i hope they do LOL
What’s even more concerning is how easy it will be to do this. A Google search of my name already returns some links attempting to scam users, but those at least aren’t as widespread. If anybody can just see their name to mine, how do I know I won’t be accused of terrible things solely because nobody can confirm who’s the actual user.
hmmm, but what about leaderboards? People might get confused if there were like 20 people named the same
I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this, I’ve been waiting for something similar to this for quite a while now. There’s a LOT of risk in implementing a system like this though.
-
Impersonation in game: Will you be able to see the players tag in-game or is it something that’s only visible on their profile when you navigate to it? There will be a definite rise in scamming using this method once it’s released.
-
No use in chaning usernames: This will make the feature to change your name entirely useless, that’s a large chunk of revenue that Roblox will be missing out on and something’s definitely going to be changed down the line to recuperate that loss.
-
More ways to bypass: I’m hoping there’s systems in place to prevent Display Names from being bypassed, but we all know how the moderation filter is at times. I’ve seen some incredibly offensive names in-game that aren’t tagged. We’ll see how that is once it’s dropped.
I don’t know, this seems like a great feature, my only hope is that these problems are addressed before release and not after hundreds of impressionable kids are scammed out of their Robux or accounts. Feel free to respond to the above questions and explain things further to resolve the concerns I have.
it can happen every where, where custom names exist at all.
there is more ideas for yt’bers like Flamingo, and i don’t see any problems.
