Say "Hello" to Display Names!

Will this update come out for beta testers before being released to everyone?

Excited to see this coming to Roblox and how it will work!
Might be the best new feature of this year!

Honestly, I don’t know if this is beneficial or useless; I don’t know what to think about this update.

To fix this, instead of barring people from using names; people with that original name should get a verified checkmark like on twitter.

This sounds like it will be very interesting once the update rolls out, I like it!

The only thing is, you may have to take measures to prevent impersonation. The risk of this will be very high.

And the verification process actually works, unlike Twitter. Also, I think they should add an icon in chat to indicate that someone is a dev, admin, etc.

Their username shows up in the playerlist as in when you click on them.

I presume when you say;

  • Display Names will still need to be verified by our filters

That this’ll mean users can’t name themselves after Roblox staff, star creators, and Prominent community members?
For example if I gave my user the display name of “John Shedletsky” I’d be denied that display name due to it being the name of ex-staff member and prominent member of the community or naming myself “Flamingo” would also be denied since Albert is a Star Creator.

I think this is a nifty update; it definitely allows for further customization where games that can benefit from it can utilize it. However, just like the majority of people here, if not everyone so far, I am concerned with impersonation. For games that have a custom name display, using display names could pose a concern with impersonating either reputable Roblox community members, developers/admins of the game being played, or both.

After reading that the display names are not unique, I think a system to prevent impersonation would be necessary to safely use this in a game where impersonation could stem multiple issues.

As good as this update will be there will be as well some unwanted outcomes, especially that we already have some questionable (inappropriate) names that have bypassed the system and since the filter won’t really be changed we might see a ton of people using the same display name.

To protect certain people from impersonation,
there could be almost like a duplicate star program group, but tailored for creators & developers, etc.
That give you a verified check in-game and on your profile.
With a thorough verification to protect ones identity via an application process.

I do agree, it exposes more bullying to those that are already vunerable. And frankly, I don’t see the benefits of the system overall.

Sounds like an idea, but that doesn’t stop “impersonation” or “scams”. I’d say that it in fact promotes it to a greater degree.

With this update, they should add a verified icon next to a player’s icon in games or on they’re profile in case of impersenation.

@be_nj Suggestion for in-game display names;

I suggest adding a thing when a player chats it displays both their @ and display name. This’d help stop impersonation without having to verify everyone who has a following on Roblox. For example right now a chat message for a display name looks like this;

[Frankish]: Hello Everyone!

But if you implement this system your messages would look more like;

[Frankish (@ApeGun) ]: Hello Everyone!

Looking at the example does look a little bulky, but I’m sure if you wanted you could make the @ smaller in the message or do like twitter does and just put it in italics bellow the display name.

I really do think this would help out with your main issue due to a user being able to check by looking at their @ too. For example a user impersonating me goes in game and starts chatting like they are me. Users can easily debunk them since their @ does not match mine. This’d also let you keep both names in-game while not getting rid of one or the other.

I do think that’s a good idea, however if you have the display name and username in the same chat message, it looks a bit weird and seems a bit long. I think if it just showed the display name, that would be fine.

This is a good idea, but you are right, it’s bulky. I would think more of a subtle approach to this would be; that when you hover over someone’s display name with your cursor, it shows their @username + maybe their displayed name on the side.

I applaud you guys for taking initiative for creating displaynames. I see how it could be beneficial in things like roleplaying. However i just feel that negative consequences could easily come out of this. Also will searching for someones profile if they are using there displayname people could impersonate no? I just feel like in my personal.opinion its a waste of resources for something not really necessary.

I see impersonation becoming a prominent risk here, but I’m interested to see what this will look like nonetheless.

yay, if this were every implemented I’d do what I said after and make the @ username in italics under the message or if you hover your mouse over the username (for mobile this likely be touching the name) it’d show you the @ beside their name. Anyways I already see this system work in RP game with RP names and unless if the user had some long name it’d not be that obnoxious.
